More than 2,000 years ago, the Sandberg, between Roseldorf and Platt, was an important centre of Celtic culture. It was home to the largest known central Celtic settlement in Austria. The Sandberg is around 340 metres high. The Celtic Tower on the Sandberg is an observation tower with views across the Schmidatal, the Retzer Land and the Pulkautal. This place therefore combines a cultural and historical focal point with a specific vantage point.
Celtic History and Excavations
Coin finds from Roseldorf point to trade links with the Rhineland, Bavaria, the area around Prague and the Pannonian-Hungarian region. They add evidence of connections in various directions to the history of the settlement. The exhibition room at the Zöchmann Reinhard winery, Roseldorf 29, provides an overview of the excavations at the Celtic settlement on the Sandberg between Roseldorf and Platt, as well as the findings that emerged from them. The coin finds and excavation results offer different ways to explore the history of the Sandberg.
Church and Mill Monument
The completed church in Roseldorf was consecrated as early as 1280. The Federal Monuments Authority’s list dated 23 June 2026 lists the Catholic parish church of the Nativity of Mary in Roseldorf as a protected monument; it was placed under protection by decree pursuant to Section 3.
The mill monument recalls another chapter in the village’s history. Stroj used a waterwheel, a cogwheel and a lantern gear (cage gear) as the basis for the three sculptures. They were installed along the former Roseldorf millstream. As visitors walk past each station, they form an imagined reconstruction of the mechanism as a whole. The motifs and their sequence give the monument both a technical and a spatial interpretation.
Cycling Around Roseldorf
A shared footpath and cycle path, around 370 metres long, begins at the western entrance to the village at the turn-off towards Sitzendorf an der Schmida. It runs south of the B 2 regional road as far as the junction with the L 1146. The regional “Riesling” cycling route connects directly to this path. When planning your trip, you can therefore take into account both the short local section and its link to the regional route.
Cellar Lane and Refreshments
Roseldorf’s cellar lane lies north of the village and runs along a hill. It includes the Zöchmeister winery’s traditional wine tavern and a self-service Spritzer rest stop. As business arrangements may change, check before your visit whether both options will be available during your stay.
Roseldorf as a Place to Stay
Different interests can shape your choice of stay: if you are mainly interested in cultural history, you can focus on the Sandberg, the excavations and the mill monument. If you would like to include cycling, the shared footpath and cycle path, around 370 metres long and directly connected to the “Riesling” route, offers a specific starting point for planning. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Roseldorf, you can first decide whether culture or cycling will play a bigger part in your stay.
