Pilgrimage through the Southern Weinviertel

Prottes lies directly on the Weinviertel St Francis Way, a pilgrimage route about 135 kilometres long through the varied agricultural landscape of the Southern Weinviertel. The gently rolling countryside is also ideal for leisurely walks and bike rides. When planning a pilgrimage stage, it is important to know that you can start or finish at any of the region’s 26 participating towns, including Prottes. This means you can plan the town as the starting or finishing point of a selected section and tackle the route in stages.

Cellar Quarter and Views over the Marchfeld

Route 1 offers another way to explore Prottes on foot. It leads through the cellar quarter and past a series of charming wine cellars. From Feldrain, you can optionally climb to the Barbarakreuz; from there, the view stretches across the Marchfeld. If you skip the climb, you can focus on the route through the cellar quarter. If you take it, you add an elevated viewpoint to your route. The Barbarakreuz stands at one of the highest points above Prottes, in front of the Pro 77 drilling rig. It was erected in memory of employees who died in accidents while working in oil production. This place therefore combines a viewpoint with a specific act of remembrance.

Oil and Natural Gas as Visitor Attractions

The oil and natural gas educational trail in Prottes is an open-air museum. Its exhibits include an operational facility belonging to OMV AG. Along the OMV adventure bike trail, eleven information panels explain oil and natural gas, including how these resources are formed. The two attractions have different focuses: the educational trail includes a technical facility as part of the exhibition, while the panels along the bike route share information along the way. You can choose between an open-air museum with a technical exhibit and a bike ride whose information panels focus on these resources.

Choose Routes to Suit Your Interests

The route options differ in scale and focus: the St Francis Way is a regional pilgrimage route, Route 1 passes through the cellar quarter and offers an optional climb, and the OMV adventure bike trail is dedicated to oil and natural gas. The gently rolling countryside is also ideal for leisurely walks and bike rides. This gives you a choice of different ways to explore the Weinviertel, from a pilgrimage stage and a local walking route to a themed bike trail.

Rest Area and Architectural History

The ViertlerhĂĽtte was built in 1870. The Weinviertel rest area in Prottes is intended for local residents, visitors and day-trippers to relax. Its facilities include a covered seating area, bicycle racks, a bike service station, a drinking fountain, signposts and an information board. The racks and service station are particularly useful for cyclists; the covered seating area provides a place to rest. The drinking fountain, signposts and information board round out the facilities at the rest area.
