Stockenboi lies on Lake Weißensee, the highest-altitude swimming lake in the Alps. The landscape includes rocky and forested slopes as well as extensive areas of meadows and woodland. When planning your trip, you can choose from several highlights: an accessible trail along the lake outflow, the network of hiking trails in the municipality, experiences on Goldeck and cycle paths along the Drau. The parish church and events organised by local associations also provide a cultural point of interest.

On foot and on the water at Lake Weißensee

The accessible educational lakeside trail starts either at the car park on the east shore of Lake Weißensee or at the Dolomitenblick boat landing. From both starting points, it follows the lake outflow along the Weissenbach to the Stockenboi lido. Its route by the water differs from a trip on the lake and offers a distinct way to experience the landscape.

There are around 70 kilometres of hiking trails throughout the municipality for families, experienced hikers and climbers. This approximate figure refers to the hiking trail network in Stockenboi, not to a single route. So, if you are planning a specific hike, use the distance of that route as your guide, not the total length of the network.

Hiking trails and Goldeck

The Goldeck Panorama Road in Zlan-Stockenboi offers views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. After 14.5 kilometres, it reaches the “Seetal” terminal car park at an altitude of 1,900 metres; the maximum gradient is 10 per cent. This clearly specifies the route’s length, endpoint and elevation.

Those who want to reach the distinctive summit of Goldeck on foot can take an easy hiking trail. Goldeck also has a groomed trail for sledders, ski tourers, snowshoers and walkers. The trails mentioned cater to different activities, from hiking to winter pursuits.

Nature, cycling and culture

The “Alpenperle”, Austria’s first electric hybrid passenger ship, sails on Lake Weißensee. The ship offers views of the nature park’s landscape. Unlike the educational lakeside trail, which follows the Weissenbach, here you experience the landscape from the water. If you are planning a trip, check the timetable beforehand.

Nature park rangers offer informative excursions in the nature park for interested visitors. For cycling, Stockenboi has cycle paths along the Drau. This gives you a choice of activities when planning your trip: an excursion with nature park rangers, routes by the water, a boat trip or cycling along the Drau.

Stockenboi Parish Church, also known as Bichlkapelle, is a Gothic church from 1513 with Baroque alterations. From 1752 to 1780, it served as a mission station for the Servites. The term “Baroque Gothic” refers to two stylistic layers: a Gothic church with Baroque additions. This allows the building’s style to be described more precisely than by using a single stylistic term.

Events organised by local associations take place in Stockenboi, including traditional church fairs, choir festivals and theatre performances. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these events, check the dates in advance.
