Two distinct themes are at the heart of a visit to Zlan: the history of the Protestant church and its organ, and excursions and trails on the Goldeck. The Protestant Church in Zlan is a notable cultural and historical destination; the Goldeck Panoramic Road offers scenic views of mountains and valleys. When planning, it is worth keeping these themes separate: an interest in church architecture and its musical history leads to a different kind of discovery than a circular route that returns to Zlan or a scenic excursion road. This lets you plan your stay around culture, hiking or views, while keeping the corresponding route in mind.
Church and Organ History
The Protestant Church in Zlan is the second-largest Protestant church building in Carinthia. Another distinctive feature is the Zlan organ: it has 28 stops across four manuals, as well as a pedal, and was the largest organ in Carinthia. The two rankings refer to different things—the church building and the instrument. The historically significant “Ladstätter Organ” was rededicated in August 2025 after its renovation; it is the work of organ builder Jakob Ladstätter.
The pulpit and altar also have a specific provenance: both come from St. James’ Church, Villach’s main church. The Zlan singing group, Sängerrunde Zlan, is also part of local musical life, singing at festivals and in the church. For music enthusiasts, the story extends beyond the instrument: local singing at festivals and in the church is also part of Zlan’s cultural identity. The theme thus encompasses the building, organ, furnishings and singing—different points of interest for travelers who are interested in church and music history as well as the landscape.
Goldeck Panoramic Road
The Goldeck Panoramic Road is a scenic excursion road in Zlan-Stockenboi. It is 14.5 kilometers long and leads to the “Seetal” end parking area at an elevation of 1,900 meters. Along the road, there are views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Hiking on the Goldeck
The Seetal end parking area is a starting point for hiking and experiencing the mountain landscape. The distinctive summit of the Goldeck can also be reached via an easy hiking trail. These are different points of reference for planning: you can consider Seetal a starting point for experiencing nature and hiking, or make the trail to the summit a destination in its own right.
Circular Route via Edlerweg
Another option is the Zlan – Edlerweg – old Goldeck Road – Zlan circular route. From Zlan, it passes by the Protestant church, follows the Edlerweg and returns to Zlan via the old Goldeck Road. Here, the sequence of trails and return to the starting point are the key to finding your way; for the panoramic road, the focus is instead on its length, end parking area and views. This comparison is useful when deciding between a named loop and a scenic excursion road.
