Latschach brings together church history, local customs and outdoor activities. The parish church is part of the village’s history and also serves as the starting point for a described hike. Georgijagen adds a cultural highlight, while Rotschitza Gorge offers a climbing tour. Other ideas for planning excursions include the Fuchsfährte nature trail in Oberaichwald, near Lake Faak, and Finkenstein Castle ruins above the lake. You can tailor your stay to whichever of these interests you most.

Church history and Georgijagen

Latschach was elevated to parish status in 1752. The annual 10-church pilgrimage route also includes the parishes of St. Stefan and Latschach. The church theme is therefore present both in the area’s history and in a recurring pilgrimage route.

Another cultural feature is Georgijagen, also known as Ĺ entjurja jagat. At the initiative of the Latschach village community, all local forms of this tradition in Carinthia were brought together. The focus is therefore on the different regional variations. A UNESCO register entry recorded in 2025 lists the Latschach village community as the contact for the tradition.

Hiking from Latschach

A route description published in 2024 for the Latschach–Untergreuth–Outschena–Baumgartnerhof–Kanzianiberg–Finkenstein hike names the car park by the parish church in Latschach as the starting point. If you plan to take this route, check trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.

Climbing in Rotschitza Gorge

The climbing tour in Rotschitza Gorge takes a little over an hour. It passes over boulders and suspension bridges, uses steel cables, and reaches a height of six metres. The entrance to the climbing area is near the Baumgartnerhof restaurant in Altfinkenstein, right beside the Rotschitza Waterfalls. The restaurant is at Altfinkenstein 6, 9582 Latschach. As conditions and access requirements may vary, check them before your tour. The duration provides a guide for planning your time.

Nature and historic buildings

The Fuchsfährte nature trail in Oberaichwald, near Lake Faak, offers families a range of adventure stations. Along the trail, visitors learn about various nature-related topics in the languages of the Alpine-Adriatic region. The focus here is on experiencing nature and sharing knowledge in several languages.

Dating from the 12th century, Finkenstein Castle ruins stand above Lake Faak. The surviving remains contain an arena that seats around 1,000 people.

The nature activities each have a different focus: climbing takes centre stage in Rotschitza Gorge, while the Fuchsfährte combines adventure stations with knowledge about nature. If you are travelling with children, the Fuchsfährte’s explicitly family-oriented focus is a useful guide when choosing; the gorge offers a different kind of outing.
