An annual church festival on Whit Monday, an alpine pasture at an altitude of 1,700 metres and the opportunity to watch bats live: Feistritz an der Gail offers distinct reasons to visit. There are also churches with their own religious and historical associations, as well as cycling options with different destinations and landscapes. So when planning your trip, you can first choose your focus: local traditions, churches, nature or cycling.

Local Traditions and Church Festival

The annual church festival takes place on Whit Monday. If you are planning your trip specifically around it, check the date of Whit Monday in the calendar for your chosen year. During the Kufenstechen, men ride unsaddled horses and strike a wooden barrel with iron clubs. Then, during the Lindentanz, the girls of the village, dressed in splendid Gailtal traditional costumes, are led to dance beneath the lime tree. The church festival provides the recurring date in the calendar, while the Kufenstechen and Lindentanz mark the sequence of events within the tradition.

Churches and Walking Routes

The parish church of Feistritz an der Gail / Ziljska Bistrica is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours. The Maria Schnee alpine chapel was consecrated on 6 August 1911. The branch church of Maria Magdalena is at the start of the mountain meadows, about a 30-minute walk from the parish church or the car park at the funeral hall. These churches have distinctly different associations: the parish church is named for its dedication, the alpine chapel for a specific consecration date, and Maria Magdalena for its location and the walk to reach it. Allow for the walking time when planning your schedule.

Alpine Pasture and Bats

The Feistritzer Alm lies at the foot of the Oisternig at an altitude of 1,700 metres. This elevation gives the landscape theme a specific point of reference. At Austria’s first bat house, the 1st Austrian Bat House in Feistritz an der Gail, visitors can watch bats live, especially lesser horseshoe bats. These two nature experiences offer different highlights: the alpine pasture appeals to those interested in high-altitude landscapes, while the bat house offers the chance to observe animals up close.

Cycling and Other Activities

Near Feistritz an der Gail, the Gailtal Cycle Path R3 offers the opportunity to cycle along the Drau. In addition, a cycle route connects Feistritz an der Gail via Hohenthurn to Tarvis and the Canal Valley. The details point to different cycling destinations: the R3 follows the Drau, while the route via Hohenthurn leads towards Tarvis and the Canal Valley. If cycling is part of your trip, check current route conditions in advance.

The model airfield is another activity option, but it has a specific condition for use: visiting pilots may use it after registering through a club member; in general, the airfield is reserved for club members with valid insurance cover.
