At Maltaberg, alpine summit destinations meet a themed circular trail. Stubeck, Reitereck and Loibspitze offer different points of reference for a mountain hike; the Stran Bee Circular Trail focuses on information about bees. When choosing, it is worth considering summit elevation, route, stated elevation gain and time estimates separately. This makes it possible to tailor your day’s destination to a summit, a route or a nature theme.

Summits and routes at Maltaberg

Stubeck, at 2,370 metres, can be reached from the KramerhĂĽtte via trail no. 557. From the summit, the panoramic view extends from the gentle peaks of the Nockberge in the east to the Hohe Tauern. The starting point, trail number and views provide concrete points of reference when choosing a hike: in addition to the approach, you can also factor in the expansive views from the summit.

Reitereck is the highest mountain in the summit group that can be reached directly from Maltaberg. The route leads north from the Kramerhütte into the Faschaun and continues to the Maltinger Alpl. On the ascent, you pass the Ochsenhütte at 2,195 metres; a marked trail leads to the east ridge. The ascent is listed as 1,300 metres of elevation gain and four hours. Factor both the time estimate and elevation gain into your day’s planning. The route and named stages supplement the summit information with concrete points of orientation.

Loibspitze is another hiking summit: 2,229 metres high and most easily reached from Maltaberg. In terms of elevation, it is lower than the 2,370-metre Stubeck. The panoramic view from the Nockberge to the Hohe Tauern is also noted for Stubeck; for Loibspitze, accessibility from Maltaberg is a distinctive feature. Alpine conditions for this hike depend on the season and should therefore be taken into account when planning.

The Stran Bee Circular Trail

Another option is the Stran Bee Circular Trail. It runs along the foot of the sunny side of Maltaberg, through the landscape of the Maltatal valley. Thirteen information panels provide information about bees. People interested in bees, tourists and hikers can walk the trail. Unlike the summit destinations, the focus here is on a specific topic: information about bees makes the circular trail a themed alternative to mountain hikes. You can therefore choose the focus of your outing according to whether you prefer a summit and its route or a circular trail featuring information about bees.

Factor starting points into your planning

The Kramerhütte is the starting point for trail no. 557 to Stubeck. The Maltaberg–Stubeck–Frido-Kordon-Hütte hike, on the other hand, starts at the Maltaberg / Leonhardhütte bus stop. The different starting-point details apply to the respective hikes and should be considered when making your choice. If you are planning to travel by public transport, check the current timetable in advance.
