Teuchl offers several focal points for planning a trip: historic traces of silver mining, the parish church, and the mountain landscape around Teuchlspitz. There is also a mountain bike tour with named starting and finishing points. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Teuchl, you can first consider whether cultural history, scenery, or a particular activity should shape your stay.
Mining History and Parish Church
Silver mining in Teuchl is recorded in the oldest mining court register for the Obervellach mining district, dating from 1480. To this day, you can see the remains of houses, so-called surface workings, and spoil heaps from the former mining operations. The various relics offer several specific points of connection to the subject of mining: it is not just about a single historical activity, but also about traces that have been preserved in Teuchl.
Another historical landmark is Teuchl Parish Church. It is a small Baroque church situated on a hillside. Its building history goes back to a predecessor chapel dating from 1650, which was demolished. The church was rebuilt from 1746 onward, and the new building was consecrated in 1758. The dates therefore mark different stages: the predecessor building, the start of the new construction, and its consecration. A visit to the church can thus also be viewed as a glimpse into a development spanning more than a century.
Teuchlspitz: Hiking Route, Natural Monument, and Views
Teuchlspitz is a remote summit in the Kreuzeck Group and a viewpoint in the Mölltal valley. From there, you can enjoy far-reaching views of the Tauern main ridge, the Kreuzeck Group, the Reißeck Group, and Lake Millstatt. How far you can see depends on the weather. The named landscape areas provide a clear sense of direction from the viewpoint; the actual view depends on the weather conditions.
The Teuchlspitz hiking route passes via Egger’s Au Alm to the “Materle Lärche” natural monument at 1,770 m. The natural monument is an ancient larch. The route thus combines a named stretch via the alpine pasture with a specific destination in the landscape. Teuchlspitz Chapel is also among the historical features of the summit area: it was built at the end of the 18th century.
Another activity is the Teuchl (RE4) mountain bike tour, which runs from Penk to Teuchl and ends at Gasthof Alpenheim. The two tours are described using different details: for the RE4, Penk and Gasthof Alpenheim are named as the start and finish points, while the hiking route includes Egger’s Au Alm and the natural monument along the way.
Plan Your Visit and Journey
Every year, a summit Mass is held at Teuchlspitz on the third Saturday in July, with a prayer for a blessing of good weather. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the date locally in advance. This way, the exact date remains part of your planning rather than being based on an unverified assumption.
The route to Teuchl follows the B106 Mölltal federal highway. Near the “Penker Wirt,” the road branches off onto an approximately 7 km paved mountain road. Road conditions can vary seasonally, so take this into account when planning your journey. There is roadside parking above Teuchl Church. Visitors are asked to park considerately and use space efficiently.
Which holiday apartment is right for your plans depends on which of these focal points you choose and which excursions you have in mind.
