Lendorf combines seasonal natural attractions with cultural and historical themes. The Yellow Alpenrose, also known as Lendorf’s Wonder Flower, grows at the foot of Hühnersberg and is a destination for hikers, walkers and botany enthusiasts. It blooms in May and June. If you’re planning a visit to see the plant, you can plan around this period. Those more interested in culture will find other points of interest in the buildings, frescoes and stories.
Churches, Mosaics and Frescoes
In the 5th and 6th centuries, Teurnia was a thriving Roman provincial capital. One of its main attractions is an early Christian bishop’s church. Another highlight is the symbolic mosaic floor in the early Christian cemetery church outside the city walls. The two church sites offer different points of interest: the bishop’s church is a major attraction, while the mosaic floor stands out for its symbolic design and location outside the city walls. Teurnia can thus be explored both through its historic role as a provincial capital and through its early Christian buildings.
The Gothic parish church of St. Peter in Holz dates from around 1400. Its frescoes depict the Passion of Christ, the Resurrection of the Blessed, the procession of the Blessed to the Heavenly Castle, and fragments of the legend of Saint Dorothea. Several religious scenes and fragments of legends are thus found side by side in one church. Unlike Teurnia’s early Christian buildings, the focus here is on a Gothic parish church and its frescoes. The gap in time between these early Christian sites and the period around 1400 offers a clear historical contrast.
The story of the origins of Maria Bichl Church tells of shepherds who hung a simple image of Mary on a birch trunk. The image and the birch trunk provide a tangible motif for this origin story. In addition to construction dates and frescoes, this offers another way to explore churches: through a story about how a place of worship came to be. When comparing the church sites, you can contrast the frescoes at St. Peter in Holz with an origin story.
Nature and Water Skiing
Lendorf’s Wonder Flower, the Yellow Alpenrose, is also designated a natural monument. A noble crayfish gene pool has been established at Lendorf Lake to preserve this special species. These are two distinct nature themes: the Alpenrose is a named plant with a seasonal flowering period and designated status, while the noble crayfish is the focus of efforts to preserve an animal species. The gene pool draws attention to species conservation; the Alpenrose offers a botanical focus.
Water skiing is available through the UNION Water Ski Club Lendorf by appointment. Include this activity in your travel plans only after making arrangements in advance, and check the current packages before your trip. The planning requirements are quite different: for the Wonder Flower, the key factor is its May and June flowering period; for water skiing, it’s making an appointment. Keep both conditions in mind when deciding whether to include these activities in your stay.
