Greifenburg is located in the Upper Drau Valley and offers a range of options for your stay: the water adventure trail through a gorge, the swimming lake with several facilities, hiking destinations and historic buildings. Cycling along the Drau, a high ropes course and canyoning add to the choice of outdoor activities. When planning your stay, you can choose to focus on nature, activities on the water or culture.

Gorge and Swimming Lake

The Gnoppnitzbach water adventure trail leads through a gorge shaped over thousands of years by ice, water, wind and weather. Conditions on the trail can vary. Greifenburg swimming lake covers four hectares and has a spacious sunbathing lawn. Its facilities include a diving platform, water slide, trampoline, bocce court and playground. The options range from facilities in the water to opportunities for play and exercise on land.

Hiking and Other Outdoor Activities

The Waisacher Alm can be reached on foot from Bruggen via hiking trail G5 or from the Gamberger snack station in about 2 to 2.5 hours. Trail conditions can vary. The E.T. Compton Hut serves as a starting point for climbing the ReiĂźkofel; alpine conditions can also vary. You can plan on an approximate walking time of 2 to 2.5 hours to reach the Waisacher Alm; for climbing the ReiĂźkofel, however, the E.T. Compton Hut is the relevant starting point for planning.

Cycling along the Drau is one of the leisure activities in Greifenburg. The Greifenburg climbing park has a high ropes course. Canyoning is available as a leisure activity among impressive rock formations and in crystal-clear water. For hang-gliders and paragliders, shuttle buses take participants to the launch sites on the Emberger Alm. Activities range from hiking and cycling to climbing, canyoning and air sports.

Castle and Parish Church

The existence of Greifenburg Castle is documented from the first half of the 12th century. A document from 1166 names the lords of the castle at the time by both their first names and the castle name “de Grifenberc”. The castle is privately owned and is a carefully restored historic site. It can be rented for parties and celebrations as well as art, cultural and informational events. If you are considering it for a specific event, confirm availability before booking.

Greifenburg Parish Church offers a different historical perspective: it is a Late Gothic complex, completed in 1521 and given a Baroque makeover around 1700. The master builder was Lorenz Rieder. While the castle’s history is documented in an early charter, the parish church reveals a building history spanning several periods.
