From the district of Gatschach, the view stretches across Lake Weissensee and the surrounding mountains. Hiking also reveals different sides of the area: a circular route leads from the village square along a northern forest path towards Techendorf, then returns on an easy hiking trail. Other routes have their own features—from the bee nature trail to paths along the lakeside promenade. When planning, it is therefore worth looking at a route’s terrain and course as well as its name.

Circular Routes, Forest Paths and the Lakeside Promenade

The Weissensee Bee Nature Trail is a circular route. It starts at the village square in Gatschach, then follows the northern forest path towards Techendorf before returning on an easy hiking trail. Along the trail, you can observe a demonstration beehive, see bees up close and learn more about their work and lives. The route thus connects the walk with a specific nature theme, rather than focusing solely on its course.

Another description of the northern forest path begins in Praditz and leads via Oberdorf, Gatschach, Techendorf and Neusach to Ronacherfels. The path runs through the forest and, in some places, along its edge. Routes LS_W1 “Praditz” and LS_W2 “Urschitz” differ in their described return routes: LS_W1 heads west and returns to Gatschach via the northern lakeside promenade. LS_W2 also heads west and returns via the lakeside promenade; its features include views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

LS_W1 is mostly flat and runs along the sunny side, with gentle, short climbs. Its route may change as paths are maintained and signage is updated. By contrast, tour W7 “Around the Gatschacher Weide” includes a challenging final 300-metre climb with short grassy sections. Its highest point is at an elevation of 1,130 metres. These details give a clear sense of the differences in terrain without assuming a walking time for any of the routes.

Views of the Lake and Mountains

Trail 3 “Tschabitsch” starts on the lakeside promenade at the level of Hotel Wiesenhof in Gatschach and follows the promenade. The route offers views of the lake and the surrounding mountains; how clearly they can be seen depends on the weather and the time of year. The district itself is also associated with views across Lake Weissensee and the surrounding mountains. Those who take the landscape into account when choosing a route can find several described viewpoints, both along the way and from the district.

St. Martin and a Historic Visit

The branch church of St. Martin in Gatschach is a Late Gothic building. It was first mentioned in a document in 1485 and was Baroque in style in the 17th century. These two dates give the church its own historical context, independent of the hiking paths and their individual routes.

A visit by Paolo Santonino is also associated with Gatschach: on 3 November 1485, the secretary of Pietro Carlo, the Archbishop of Caorle, arrived at the “lacus albus”, Lake Weissensee. There, he was served delicious lake trout of extraordinary size. The episode belongs to the area’s history; it describes an event from the past, not a tasting opportunity today.

There are several ways to plan your visit: a circular route centred on bees, forest paths with different routes, trails offering views of the lake and mountains, and the challenging final climb described for W7. The historical references to St. Martin and Santonino add two specific dates from Gatschach’s past to this landscape and hiking perspective.
