A Romanesque funnel portal, a main square of medieval origin and a museum featuring railway and city history offer various ways to explore the cultural heritage of Sankt Veit an der Glan. There are also walking trails, an indoor pool and seasonal opportunities at the outdoor pool. When planning your stay, you can weigh up culture, exercise and swimming as different elements of your visit.
Churches, Squares and Historic Details
The parish church of St. Veit an der Glan is mentioned repeatedly in documents dating from 1131 to 1285. Its floor plan is that of a Romanesque pillar basilica. The large funnel portal dates from the 13th century; it has been extensively renovated and altered and is considered one of the finest Romanesque portals in Carinthia.
The Church of Our Lady tells a different story: Konrad von Aufenstein and his wife had it built for the Poor Clares between 1323 and 1326. The Calvary Church of Maria Loretto was built on a hill northwest of the city in 1658. On its west side, beneath a wooden canopy, is an altar with a Baroque Crucifixion group dating from 1729, attributed to the workshop of Johann Pacher.
The main square and individual monuments also add historic character. Originally medieval, the main square is one of the largest in Carinthia; the city walls are among the features that give Sankt Veit an der Glan its distinctive charm. The marble plague column was created after the plague was repelled in 1715. The SchĂĽsselbrunnen fountain contains a large marble basin from a Roman-era well in Virunum on the Zollfeld.
City History and Independent Exploration
The St. Veit Museum covers railways, model railways, city history, motorisation, postal services and telecommunications. The museum also houses the world's only driving simulator for a class 4030 railcar. As exhibitions may change, check the latest information if you have specific topics or the simulator in mind.
For exploring without set tour times, you can also use the digital city experience at your own pace. Check the latest information about the offer when planning your visit, as visitor services may change. The museum and the digital city experience offer different ways to explore the town's themes: the former through the collections mentioned, the latter through independent exploration.
Walking Trails, Woodland and E-bike Tours
Vituspark is a woodland area used mainly for walking. A wooden pavilion offers a place to take a break. At Kalvarienberg, shaded paths lead from Sankt Veit an der Glan to a chapel with views over the city; the area is popular for walks and short outings. As well as historic buildings, there are trails for different kinds of outings: a walk in the woods or a stroll up to the chapel.
There is an e-bike rental location in the city centre. Sankt Veit an der Glan is also a starting point for hikes and e-bike tours.
Indoor Pool, Sauna and Outdoor Pool
The indoor pool offers swimming indoors whatever the weather. Its listed facilities include a separate children's area, heated swimming pools and relaxation rooms. The sauna area at the indoor pool includes herbal, infusion, dry and steam saunas, as well as an infrared cabin. This means swimming and a sauna visit can be considered as different highlights of your stay.
The outdoor pool has diving towers, water slides and sports courts, making it suitable for family visits. It is a seasonal addition to the facilities at the indoor pool. Seasonal opening hours and possible maintenance closures may affect swimming facilities, so check the latest operating information before planning a day at the pool.
