Marked hiking trails with clear walking times and several historical layers give Micheldorf two distinct themes for a short discovery trip. You can plan your day around the intended walking time or focus more on church architecture and protected historic sites. This makes it easier to choose between outdoor activity, architectural history and local beer traditions.

Three Trails, Three Walking-Time Options

There are three marked trails to choose from when planning your walk: The circular route “Micheldorf-Grafendorf-Schödendorf-Micheldorf” takes 2.5 hours. The route “Agathenhof-Ostrogweg-Radweg-Friesach” is listed as taking 1.5 hours. The route “Micheldorf-Veidlmar Kreuz-Schödendorf Blochbauerweg-Landesstraße,” designated as a hiking trail, takes 2 hours.

There is a one-hour difference between the shortest and longest walking times; the two-hour route falls in between. This lets you decide first how much time you want to set aside for walking. Allow additional time for breaks and other plans when organizing your day.

Church Architecture and Historical Layers

The Micheldorf parish church combines Romanesque nave walls with a massive west tower added in the mid-15th century. The stucco panels feature ceiling paintings by Primus Haberl from 1869. The nave is the main, lengthwise part of the church interior; the masonry, tower and ceiling paintings can therefore be distinguished as different architectural and artistic layers from different periods.

The Church of St. Lorenzen am Berg was the parish seat of Micheldorf at least until the mid-12th century. This historical connection adds an earlier ecclesiastical function to the story of the parish church’s architectural features.

Protected Heritage (as of June 19, 2026)

The so-called Thurnhof at Hirter StraĂźe 1, a medieval tower and a former elementary school, is protected as a historic monument under a decision pursuant to Section 3. In Lorenzenberg, the Catholic branch church of St. Laurentius and the churchyard are protected as historic monuments under an ordinance. In Hirt, within the municipality of Micheldorf, the blast furnace of a former ironworks is also protected as a historic monument under a decision pursuant to Section 3.

The sites differ in type and protection status: the Thurnhof and blast furnace are protected by decision, while the branch church and churchyard are protected by ordinance. The range of cultural attractions thus extends from a historic tower and former school to a church complex and a former ironworks.

Brewery and Natural Swimming Pond

Micheldorf is home to the Hirt private brewery, which makes its beer using its own spring water. The brewery and beer cellar are about a 15-minute walk from Micheldorf Hirt railway station. This approximate walking time provides a specific guide for the route from the station.

The introductory part of the brewing day covers raw materials and Austrian beer styles. If you are planning to take part, check in advance whether it is offered on your preferred date. Micheldorf also has a natural swimming pond with a large sunbathing lawn. If you would like to include the pond in your stay, check in advance on visitor access and seasonal use.
