Frauenstein lies north of Sankt Veit an der Glan and is largely situated in the Wimitzer Mountains. Church and architectural history sit alongside herbal knowledge, hiking and cycling trails, as well as seasonal winter activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Frauenstein, you can plan your travel dates around the experiences you have in mind: the patronal feast is held on the Sunday after Pentecost, while winter sports depend on the weather and operating conditions.

Culture and Herbal Knowledge in Dreifaltigkeit

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Dreifaltigkeit is considered Carinthia’s only wooden church. The annual patronal feast on Trinity Sunday, the Sunday after Pentecost, includes an open-air mass in front of the church followed by a solemn procession through the forest. If this tradition is important to your travel plans, check the date for the year of your visit before booking.

Since 2001, more than 300 different herbs have been growing across 800 m² of alpine meadow in the herb garden in Dreifaltigkeit. One- to two-hour guided tours offer expert insight into traditional folk medicine; arrange your tour before you arrive. The Jägerwirt inn is next to the church. It serves hearty local cuisine, including homemade Carinthian specialties, as well as tarts and cakes. Check its current opening status in advance.

Lake, Trails and Seasons

Lake Kraiger See lies within the 532-hectare “Kraiger Schlösser” landscape conservation area; much of its shoreline remains undeveloped. Frauenstein has hiking and cycling trails that are also open to visitors. Some of the cycling routes are part of the state-wide cycling network. The municipality provides route information online. As route networks can change, check the details before setting out.

In winter, you can go cross-country skiing, sledding, ice skating and curling in Frauenstein. Which of these activities are available depends on the weather and operating conditions. Options range from trails and scenery around Lake Kraiger See to winter activities; plan according to the season and current conditions.

Frauenstein Castle and the Kraiger Castles

Frauenstein Castle was built around 1519–1521 by Christoph Welzer and his wife Agnes, née Hohenwarter, on the site of a fortified structure documented as early as the 13th century.

A short family hike leads through rolling hills, forests and fields from the very well-preserved late-medieval castle to the so-called Kraiger Castles. The route thus connects two different historic sites. The Kraiger Castles include the ruins of Hochkraig and Niederkraig, with an aqueduct and a chapel. The ruins are privately owned and access is restricted; check the current access arrangements before your hike. Conditions along the route may also change.

Frauenstein in Carinthia’s Equestrian Paradise

Horse riding also has a regional connection: the Glantal/Wimitzer Mountains region is one of four regions in Carinthia’s Equestrian Paradise, completed in May 1998. Alongside specific destinations in Dreifaltigkeit and at the Kraiger Castles, hiking, cycling and horse-riding are therefore part of the wider regional picture.
