Hillside Location and Settlement Pattern
From the west, hillside development defines the appearance of Lipizach. The village lies on the northern slope of the eastern Sattnitz above Ebenthal, in an amphitheatre-shaped landslide hollow at the edge of the eastern Sattnitz plateau. The village landscape and landform complement each other at two scales: the buildings shape the view from the west, while the hillside location places the village in its terrain. The newer residential areas also developed in a particular direction: they spread northwards from Radsberger StraĆe, favoured by sunlight and views. Thus, the slope and the development of the residential areas are described side by side, without implying that the two details describe the same thing.
Reading the Landscape Through Field Names
The field names add specific references to soil, plants and water to the village landscape. BvatĒ refers in Lipizach to boggy or marshy ground with a small pond. Hmajna denotes wooded areas that were presumably once communal property of the villagers. LiĒÅ”je refers to a place with hazel bushes and hazelnuts; TĒrÅ”ala to a water source with a small pipe. Both BvatĒ and TĒrÅ”ala refer to water, but to different things: one describes marshy ground with a small pond, the other a water source with a pipe. Hmajna and LiĒÅ”je add woodland and hazel to these themes. Those interested in the local landscape can thus gain a linguistic insight into its different features.
Two other names refer to paths and landforms. Ķvance denotes uphill and downhill stretches, as well as the road leading uphill from Ebenthal and mountain paths. VovjĒ pĒÄ·u refers to a particularly steep section of the old Radsberger StraĆe. The difference is one of scale: Ķvance encompasses several forms of ascent and descent and various references to paths, while VovjĒ pĒÄ·u names a single steep section of road. Together, the names add specific local references to the description of the hillside location.
Hiking Trails and Route Details
The hiking trails also place Lipizach at different points along a route. On the āRadsberg - North Circuitā circular hiking trail, the route reaches Lipizach and then continues for about 300 m in a northwesterly direction along the L 100C state road. The āEbenthal - Lipizach/Lipica - Predigtstuhl - Klagenfurtā hike reaches Lipizach after 4.5 km. These details answer different questions: the approximately 300 m describes a section after reaching the village, while the 4.5 km is the distance to Lipizach on the other hike. When comparing the distances, therefore, consider each one in the context of its respective route.
Bus Service and Event Date
The infrequent bus service on route 52 connects Klagenfurt, Ebenthal, Lipizach, Tutzach and Radsberg. If you plan to take the bus, check the timetable in advance; the infrequent service is a planning consideration in its own right. An event is also scheduled for a specific date in late December: the MGV-Radsberg New Yearās singing event is due to take place on 28 December 2026 in Tutzach and Lipizach. If the event is important to your stay, check the date in advance.
