In Sankt Urban, marked hiking trails and local history meet winter sports at Simonhöhe; in summer, you can swim at Lake Urbansee. To plan your stay, you can first choose based on the time of year and your main interests: hiking, winter activities, summer swimming and cultural history each offer different options.

Hiking: distances and times at a glance

Sankt Urban has almost 100 kilometers of marked hiking trails. Six marked hiking routes, ranging from 8 to 28 kilometers, offer a more specific selection. The distances vary considerably, so compare the details for each route rather than treating them all as the same length. The Panorama Trail is listed as 14 kilometers long, with a stated duration of four hours. For planning your day, you can consider both figures together: the distance and the time given for it.

The MĂĽhlenweg passes the BartlmĂĽhle, which serves as a demonstration mill. Another named hiking route is the Hoch-St.-Paul-Weg (E). In July 2025, the municipal magazine described it as a varied, special highlight.

Simonhöhe and Lake Urbansee throughout the year

Simonhöhe in St. Urban is a family ski area with easy to intermediate slopes. It also has a children’s ski school and cross-country ski trails. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between different winter interests: downhill skiing, cross-country skiing or the ski school. The easy-to-intermediate rating refers to the slopes.

In summer, swimming is possible at Lake Urbansee in Sankt Urban. This seasonal alternative to winter activities at Simonhöhe may play a role when choosing when to travel.

Local history between the church, museum and rock

St. Urban Church has been documented in records since 1164. The Krapfenbeck-Simele Museum is housed in the stylishly renovated Messnerhaus. Above Lake Urbansee, the Mithras Rock is associated with Roman finds. An image of the sun god with a halo of rays is carved into the rock. Both the connection to Roman finds and the image motif described are central to this site.

Bach Castle lies north of Lake Urbansee, was built in three construction periods and is privately owned. Kleingradenegg Branch Church was first mentioned in writing in 1462. Its cemetery wall contains a so-called Lichterstein, also known as the marriage stone. According to local tradition, anyone who can place all ten fingers into its ten holes at the same time is allowed to marry.

Churches and historical dates

Hoch St. Paul Branch Church stands at an elevation of 1,176 meters on the northeastern spur of Paulberg in the municipality of Sankt Urban. It was first documented in 1285 and is a listed monument. Its high altar dates from the last quarter of the 17th century. The church thus brings together an early documentary reference and a considerably later date for its high altar. Along with St. Urban Church and Kleingradenegg Branch Church, these historical details provide several points of reference for the history of the town.
