Yarram brings together street art, an art space in a former courthouse, a theatre and two routes of very different lengths. For travel planning, there is a choice between art in the townscape, exhibitions and events, and cycling and recreational facilities. The routes offer a 14 km spur to Port Albert and the 131 km Great Southern Rail Trail between Nyora and Yarram, which are very different in scale.
Murals and art in the townscape
Heesco Town is a series of more than 25 murals in Yarram, painted by street and silo artist Heesco Khosnaran. The colourful works transformed the town’s previously bare walls. The series gives the townscape a strong street-art focus, rather than centring on just one work.
The Yarram Water Tower was painted by Heesco Khosnaran in April 2023. GUNAIKURANI Elder Sandra Patten created the design on the lower section. This work brings together the painting of the tower and the design of a specifically identified section.
The Yarram Courthouse Gallery is a community art space in Yarram. It is located in a heritage-listed former courthouse, the former Yarram Magistrates Court. Exhibitions at the Courthouse Art Gallery change monthly. The gallery space brings the building’s history and changing artworks together as a focus for a visit; the murals provide a different accent in the townscape.
Getting oriented and events
The Yarram Visitor Information Centre is located in the original courthouse in the town centre. Its central location provides a clear point of reference for visiting the town.
The Regent Theatre is a venue for live performances, concerts, film screenings, conferences and other events. Alongside art and exhibitions, the cultural offering also includes stage performances and film. If you are planning to attend a particular performance or film screening, check the latest dates in advance so you can plan your trip accordingly.
Routes and recreational facilities
The Great Southern Rail Trail runs for 131 km between Nyora and Yarram and ends at Tarra Trail Reserve in Yarram. The reserve features picturesque wetlands, a pump track and picnic areas. This makes it possible to distinguish the route’s total length from the recreational facilities at its Yarram endpoint when planning.
The Tarra Trail starts at Yarram Wetlands and is a 14 km spur to Port Albert. It is considered an excellent cycling route for families. The two trails therefore involve different planning considerations: for the Great Southern Rail Trail, the full route and its endpoints matter; for the Tarra Trail, the 14 km distance, Port Albert as the destination and its family-friendly cycling appeal come together. You can use these details to choose a route based on its scale and destination.
Yarram Wetland Park has a basketball court, a fitness park and a skate park. These facilities complement the cycling routes with other forms of activity. Together with the wetlands, pump track and picnic areas at Tarra Trail Reserve, they provide a range of recreational options with different focuses.
