At Ouyen Lake: paths and water sports

Ouyen Lake has a path where you can walk, run and cycle; canoeing, kayaking, wakeboarding and water skiing are also offered there. This brings activities on the path and water sports together in one place. The choice therefore mainly depends on the activity: using the path on land or enjoying water sports on the lake. Which water sports are available may depend on local conditions and rules.

Local history: collection, art and walking tour

The Ouyen District History & Genealogy Centre is located in the former courthouse and preserves photographs, newspapers, books, maps, oral histories, local records, genealogical materials and other historical documents. The collection serves two interests: genealogical materials are relevant to family history, while local records, newspapers, maps and oral histories offer different kinds of material for exploring local history. Volunteers help provide access.

The Fairy Dell Mural in the Community Park on Oke Street depicts local history in a work of art. As a mural, it offers a different focus from the document collection at the Centre.

The History Walk Ouyen, described in October 2022 as an easy circuit through the main shopping area, offers a different way to connect with the town: here, the shopping area is the focus. The historical themes therefore differ by format: a collection, a work of art, and a walking tour centred on the shopping area. You can choose based on whether you are more interested in family research, local art or finding your way around the shopping area.

Blackburn Park and seasonal swimming

Blackburn Park in Ouyen has ball courts, sports fields, a playground, a skate park and public toilets. Australia’s largest Mallee rootstock is also on display there. The park brings together different recreational facilities and a distinctive exhibit. The facilities cater to different activities: sports fields and ball courts on one hand, and the playground and skate park on the other; public toilets round out the park’s amenities.

The Ouyen Swimming Pool has a seasonal schedule to factor into your plans. For January to March, daily opening hours are listed as 4 pm to 7 pm, and 1:30 pm to 7 pm on weekends. As seasonal opening hours can change, check the schedule before visiting.

Tours in the wider region

For trips outside town, Mallee Tours is a regional option. The operator has an address at 33 Ritchie Street in Ouyen; its tours travel through Murray Sunset National Park and the Ramsar wetland of Hattah-Kulkyne National Park. The operator’s Ouyen address should be distinguished from the tour areas: the trips extend into the wider region. Confirm current tour arrangements before travelling.

When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to distinguish between activities in Ouyen and tours in the wider region: first decide whether your focus is on the town or includes regional trips.
