Mount Eliza can be discovered through several distinctive features: more than six kilometres of foreshore along Port Phillip Bay, beaches with their own character, seasonal sailing programs and a monthly Farmers’ Market. There is also Mount Eliza Regional Park and its walking trails. When planning, it’s worth considering the coast, scheduled activities and a visit to the park separately: each offers different ways to shape your days in Mount Eliza.
Foreshore and beaches
The Mount Eliza Foreshore stretches for more than 6 km along Port Phillip Bay and includes six quiet beaches. Davey’s Bay is at the northern end, and Sunnyside Beach at the southern end of the stretch. This makes the foreshore a longer coastal area with several beaches, rather than a single beach. The named endpoints help give a sense of the area’s extent.
Native coastal vegetation adds to the character of the foreshore. This includes Coastal Headland Scrub, Coast Banksia Woodland and freshwater wetlands. These habitats provide a home for a diverse range of wildlife. The coastal landscape is therefore shaped not only by its beaches but also by its varied vegetation and wetlands.
At Ranelagh Beach, the sandy shore is bordered by headlands and distinguished by colourful beach huts. Access is via the southern section of Earimil Drive and a path with steep steps leading down to the beach. If you’re planning to visit, take the steep descent into account as part of the access route.
Sailing by season and day of the week
During the sailing season, Davey’s Bay Yacht Club offers sailing programs on Friday evenings and Sundays for children, teenagers and adults of all experience levels—from beginners to experienced and competitive sailors. The club also holds dinghy and keelboat races on Sunday afternoons. These are different options for sailing enthusiasts: the programs cater to a broad range of experience levels, while the races take place on Sunday afternoons.
Walks, park and market
Mount Eliza Regional Park is ideal for scenic walks and has picnic areas and a playground. There is also a designated off-leash area for dogs. The park’s offerings can therefore be matched to what you’re looking for: a walk, a picnic, a playground or an off-leash area for dogs.
The Mount Eliza Farmers’ Market takes place on the fourth Sunday of every month, from 9 am to 1 pm, in all weather, and offers seasonal produce. The market is therefore a clearly defined morning event, while the produce on offer also reflects the seasons. For planning a stay, the schedule is a useful distinction: the market returns monthly on the fourth Sunday, while the sailing programs are tied to the sailing season.
