Kingower brings together a history that began in the gold rush of the 1850s and a landscape completely surrounded by Box-Ironbark Forest. Historic finds, buildings and relics give the town its own cultural character, while nature experiences await nearby. You can get to know Kingower through both its Goldfields traces and the opportunities in its forest country.

Gold Finds from Different Eras

Discovered in 1857, the Blanche Barkley gold nugget weighed around 49.5 kg and was one of the most famous finds in the Kingower goldfields. Another well-known find is the Hand of Faith: it was unearthed in Kingower in 1980 and is considered the largest gold nugget ever found with a metal detector. The two names represent different chapters in the local gold story—a famous 19th-century find and a nugget unearthed later.

Beyond these two finds, many old sites, ruins and relics remain in Kingower. Several historic buildings are in excellent condition. For a visit focused on Goldfields history, these sites, together with the famous nuggets, offer various points of interest, from specific finds to architectural and material traces in the town.

Church, Cemetery and Local Heritage

St Marys in Kingower was one of the churches commissioned by Reverend William Hall and is considered magnificent. The building is privately owned; the congregation leases it for events. Several events are held there each year. If you would like to attend one, check the dates before your trip.

Another historic landmark is the cemetery: the present-day cemetery in Kingower has been in use since the 1860s. There are three official cemetery sites in the town in total. Together with the surviving buildings and relics, they offer a way to explore more than just one period of the town’s history.

Box-Ironbark Forest and Nearby Trails

Box-Ironbark Forest completely surrounds Kingower and is home to a wide variety of plants, birds and animals. Nearby, Kooyoora State Park offers opportunities for picnicking, enjoying the views, climbing, orienteering and nature study. The park protects significant natural features in north-central Victoria and is also home to a wide variety of plants and wildlife.

The Melville Caves Walking Track is also nearby. The 1 km circuit takes one hour to complete. While the state park offers a range of activities, the track is a specific circuit walk with a stated distance and duration. You can set aside an hour for it when planning your day.

Wine in the Centre of Kingower

Old Kingower Vineyard is a small family vineyard in the centre of Kingower and continues to produce sought-after classic vintages. This adds another local highlight to the gold rush history and nature experiences: wine production by a family business in the town.
