Hopetoun combines local history and art with trails by the lakes, designated swimming areas and opportunities for wildlife watching. When planning your stay, you can choose what to focus on: cultural insights in town, a walk around Lake Lascelles or nature watching at Lake Corrong.

History and Art in Town

The Hopetoun & District Historical Society uses the 1890s State School for its exhibitions; it also houses archives and extensive collections. The Healthy Walking Trails in Hopetoun offer a different perspective: they connect historic buildings and monuments with artworks by local artists and artists in residence. This brings collected local history and art together along the trails as distinct cultural perspectives.

Historic buildings also include Corrong Homestead and the Hopetoun Power House. Corrong Homestead was built around 1846 by Peter McGinnis. The Power House opened in 1913 as a facility to supply electricity to Hopetoun. The dates mark different historical reference points: the Homestead, built around the mid-19th century, and a later electricity supply facility.

Trails and Water

The Lake Lascelles Walk is 4.2 kilometres long, takes about an hour and partly follows unsealed paths. There are also designated swimming areas on the shore of Lake Lascelles near Mallee Bush Retreat. Check local water conditions before swimming.

Lake Corrong is another option for nature watching: trails lead to a bird hide and a wildlife waterhole, where many bird and animal species can be observed. The trails at Lake Corrong are intended for dry weather. Access to Lake Corrong is via the Henty Highway, Two Mile Road or the eastern side of Lake Lascelles. After severe weather, check local access conditions. The Lake Lascelles Walk takes about an hour; Lake Corrong, by contrast, offers trails for wildlife watching.

Accommodation and Practical Information

If you are considering an alternative to a hotel, there are powered campsites and free camping options on the shore of Lake Lascelles. If camping is an option for you, check availability locally, as arrangements may change.

Hopetoun Visitor Information Centre is located at Gateway BEET, 75 Lascelles Street. A Silo Art Trail map is available there, along with current information about access roads to Wyperfeld National Park. Check opening hours and map availability in advance. Access information may also change, so checking for the latest details can help with your planning.
