Mount Macedon combines historic gardens and heritage with forest trails and views from a distinctive summit. You can plan your trip around different interests: private gardens and art sit alongside self-guided trails, a memorial and notable natural landmarks.

Gardens, Heritage and Art

Forest Glade Gardens is a historic private garden on the southern slopes of Mount Macedon and is almost 100 years old. Duneira Estate offers a different experience: the estate is an original colonial hill station and a large garden on Mount Macedon. Its history and extensive grounds make it a special destination for anyone interested in garden landscapes and heritage.

Duneira Estate covers 38 acres. Its grounds include extensive gardens, chestnut groves and an apple orchard, as well as original outbuildings and a gatekeeper’s lodge. A tour package is listed for Duneira Estate, with guided garden and house tours and phone bookings; check the arrangements before your trip.

Viewfield is a private garden on a ten-acre property in the centre of the Mount Macedon community. This makes Duneira Estate almost four times the size of Viewfield. Viewfield’s opening periods are seasonal, an important distinction when planning a visit.

The Gallery at Mt Macedon offers another cultural attraction. Run by a collective of local artists, it features paintings, woodwork, textiles, glasswork, ceramics, jewellery, photography, origami and mosaics. The gallery therefore offers a different focus from the historic estates: here, the variety of art forms takes centre stage.

Trails, Summits and Views

At Sanatorium Lake on Mount Macedon, there are self-guided walking and horse-riding trails. The lakeside trail connects to the 29-kilometre Macedon Ranges Walking Trail. Another option is the audio-guided Murmuring Walk: it is about 2.5 kilometres long and passes through tall eucalyptus forests and a damp gully with tree ferns. By comparison, the Murmuring Walk is much shorter than the full trail.

At 1,011 metres, Camel’s Hump is the highest peak in the Macedon Ranges and offers views of the surrounding landscape. The climb to the summit gains 500 metres in elevation and leads to an ancient rock outcrop. Here, the focus is on the elevation gain and the summit itself, while the information about Sanatorium Lake mainly describes different trail lengths and activities.

The Mount Macedon Memorial Cross is 21 metres tall and commemorates all those who have served in wars and conflicts. It stands on the summit. The paved path to the Cross is suitable for visitors with limited mobility; however, there are steps at the base of the cross. Visitors can also go hiking in the Mount Macedon Memorial Cross Reserve.

Nature and Practical Information

Stanley Park on Mount Macedon is home to a hidden, medium-sized natural waterfall. Several picnic areas and a small playground add to the park’s facilities. This means visitors can enjoy both a natural experience and practical places to take a break.

Dicksonia Rare Plants is a nursery in the centre of the Mount Macedon community. It offers more than 2,000 different rare plants to choose from. As stock and business details may change, it is worth checking them before your visit. Together, the gardens, art, walking trails and landscape landmarks showcase the different sides of Mount Macedon—from a shorter loop at Sanatorium Lake to a summit climb with 500 metres of elevation gain.
