Around Fingal, coastal walks and wetlands offer options for different kinds of outings. Along the coast, basalt cliffs, a beach exposed at low tide and several trail options shape your plans; at nearby Boneo Discovery Park, a boardwalk runs through wetlands. When choosing, consider not only the destinations but also trail length, route and whether you are more interested in coastal views or nature watching.
Coastal walks and beach conditions
Nearby Fingal Picnic Area has space for a picnic or a barbecue. Nearby walking trails lead to lookouts over basalt cliffs and Fingal Beach. The beach is exposed at low tide. If you plan to visit, check local tides beforehand.
A 5-kilometre walking trail from nearby Fingal Picnic Area leads to northern Gunnamatta Beach. Current trail conditions may vary; check them before your visit.
A trail to nearby Fingal Beach offers views of the rugged coast of Cape Schanck, passes through dense coastal forest and descends several steps to the beach. The forest section and descent are as much a part of this coastal route as its beach destination; take them into account when choosing the trail.
Wetlands and wildlife watching
Nearby Boneo Discovery Park offers a different focus. The wetland activity park is surrounded by 27 acres of native flora and fauna. Its 1.5-kilometre boardwalk runs through the wetlands and ends at the Giant Games Garden. Shady trees there provide space for a picnic.
Birds nest in the park’s wetlands, frogs can be heard, and coots paddle along the waterways. Wildlife sightings are seasonal and cannot be expected on every visit.
Trail length and type of outing
Trail lengths offer a direct comparison: the boardwalk at Boneo is 1.5 kilometres long, while the walking trail to northern Gunnamatta Beach is 5 kilometres. The boardwalk is therefore the shorter route through wetlands; the longer trail leads to the beach. If length is a factor in your decision, the comparison shows two different distances and landscapes.
Two different planning details matter on the coast: at Fingal Beach, the tide determines when the beach is exposed; the walk to northern Gunnamatta Beach can be gauged by its specific length of five kilometres. So choosing between them involves considering the tide timing on the one hand and a route with a set destination and length on the other.
The picnic options also differ in their setting: Fingal Picnic Area has space for a picnic or a barbecue; at the Giant Games Garden, shady trees provide space for a picnic. If you are planning a barbecue, the picnic area is an option; for a picnic in the shade, the garden is another choice.
Plan your stay around the outings that interest you most.
