Dromana offers different perspectives on the coast and its history: paths run along the foreshore, a pier extends out over the water, and Heronswood brings together a plant collection, garden paths and guided tours. There are also beaches and offerings from the Dromana and District Historical Society. You can shape your stay around what interests you most—with time by the water, a visit to a garden or a look at local and regional history.

Coast, Pier and Trails

Dromana’s calm, sandy beaches offer opportunities for safe swimming and boating. Conditions can vary. The 200-metre Dromana Pier invites you to stroll out over the water; fishing from the pier is popular. Check current information about pier access before your visit.

The Dromana Bay Trail runs as a gravel path among trees along the Dromana Foreshore, connecting the ends at Safety Beach and McCrae. The pier and Dromana Lifesaving Club are approximately halfway along. This provides two named landmarks for orientation along the way, while the path surface and tree cover describe the trail’s character.

Further afield in the region, the longest continuous section of the Bay Trail is 11 kilometres long: it begins at Anthony’s Nose in Dromana and continues to Rye. The route therefore extends beyond Dromana. Check local trail information before setting out.

Dromana’s foreshore reserve also offers different ways to spend time by the water: it includes grassy picnic areas, shelters and walking paths, as well as a small designated camping area. Availability may vary. If you’re planning an outdoor break or a walk, you’ll find a different focus here than at the pier or on the Bay Trail.

Gardens and Tours at Heronswood

Heronswood’s living plant collection includes Diggers plants. Historic trees provide shade, and winding paths offer views of Port Phillip Bay and beyond. Garden tours introduce the history of the garden’s design and areas featuring notable plants; they also explore the newly established seed trial garden.

The tours are listed as lasting 45 minutes, with a maximum of 15 participants. Dates and format may change; check with the operator before your visit.

For families, Heronswood offers a pollinator scavenger hunt in its gardens, with a search list. Ask the operator about current availability before your visit. The activity has a different focus from the tour: it’s about searching for pollinators, while the tour focuses on garden design, plant areas and the trial garden.

Local History and Collections

The Dromana and District Historical Society’s collection includes artefacts, memorabilia, photographs, records and oral histories from Dromana and from Main Ridge, Red Hill, Red Hill South, Safety Beach, Arthurs Seat, McCrae, Rosebud and Boneo. Its focus therefore extends beyond Dromana to surrounding towns. The collection offers a way to explore the district’s history through different kinds of memorabilia and records.

The Society offers museum exhibitions as well as research and copying services. It also sells publications and photographs about local history. Alongside visiting exhibitions, written and photographic materials and research services therefore provide distinct ways to explore regional history.
