Petrelë combines a distinctive townscape with cultural history and culinary offerings. The town sits on a picturesque hill above the Erzen River and is known for its cobbled streets. Petrelë Castle and Persqop represent different historical highlights; there are also routes to the ruins and opportunities to discover local cuisine and wine.

Petrelë Castle and its history

Petrelë Castle is open to visitors. Practical access conditions may change, so check them before your visit. The castle’s history dates back to ancient times, and it was rebuilt in the Middle Ages. These two historical periods provide a framework for understanding the development of the structure without conflating its different phases.

Persqop: ancient city and monumental tomb

The ruins of Persqop Castle, also known as the ancient city of Brysak, are part of an ancient city attributed to the Illyrian tribe of the Parthini. The construction of the walls stands out: they are made of massive stone blocks without mortar. Persqop thus brings together a historical context and a specific architectural feature.

Another archaeological feature is the monumental tomb of Persqop. It lies on the eastern side of Mount Vila and is classified as a vaulted tomb with two chambers. The tomb is associated with a fortified settlement dated to the 5th to 2nd centuries BC. This period refers to the settlement; it is not a precise date for the tomb itself. Those interested in the site’s history can therefore distinguish the description of the tomb from the dating of its associated settlement.

Routes and getting there

From the center of Petrelë village, visitors can walk to the ruins of Persqop along a good country road. Conditions on rural roads can change. A Tirana itinerary also recommends a hiking trail from Petrelë Castle to the ancient settlement of Persqop. Check trail conditions and navigation locally before planning the walk.

Travel by bus is also described: Petrelë Castle can be reached from the Southeast Terminal; after about 20 minutes, you will arrive at Mamica Square in the center of Petrelë. The time is approximate, and services and journey times may change. Check the current route and timetable before travelling. Arriving by bus at the square and walking to the ruins are different journeys to different destinations and should be considered separately when planning.

Local cuisine and wine

Two different places are mentioned for local cuisine. The grounds of Petrelë Castle are home to restaurants and cafés where visitors can enjoy local cuisine with panoramic views. In the Zaranik neighborhood, Fustanella Farm is an agritourism business with an organic restaurant following a “farm-to-table” approach. Wine tastings are also offered there. The culinary highlights therefore differ: the castle grounds focus on local cuisine and views, while the farm offers an organic restaurant and tastings. Individual businesses, restaurant operations, and tastings may change; confirm what is available before your visit.
