The area around Kus combines a karst landscape with caves, a canyon along the Erzen River, and regional cuisine. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Kus, you can weigh nature destinations, places to eat, and road conditions as different priorities when planning your trip.
Landscape around Kus
Kus belongs to the administrative unit of Bërzhitë. There are two mountainous areas and a valley there; the landscape is predominantly hilly and also includes fields, mountains, and valleys. The settlement lies on both sides of the Tiranë–Elbasan national road. The wildlife is also diverse: in the more densely vegetated areas of the administrative unit, animals including wolves, foxes, wild boars, hares, martens, quail, partridges, and turtle doves can be found.
Karst gorge and caves
Nearby, the Gryka e Skoranës is a canyon formed by river erosion in limestone along the middle course of the Erzen, near Shpella e Zezë and Pëllumbas. It is about 1 km long, over 120 m deep, and about 20 m wide. A large karst spring emerges on the left slope of the gorge, a few dozen metres below Shpella e Zezë.
Shpella e Zezë, also known as Shpella e Pëllumbasit, was declared a natural monument in 2002. The cave is about 360 m long, 10–15 m wide, and 15–45 m high; it contains stalactites and stalagmites. These measurements are not definitive. Early humans used the cave as a settlement during the later Middle Palaeolithic. Shpella e Pëllumbasit is listed as a Category I cultural monument in Pëllumbas, Bërzhitë.
Hiking trails and roads
A scenic hiking trail about 2 km long leads through an impressive gorge above the Erzen to the entrance of Pëllumbas Cave. Another hiking route runs from Pëllumbas along the river to waterfalls. The Gryka e Skoranës can be reached via the approximately 27 km Tiranë–Ibë–Pëllumbas motor road.
For Kus, Lugë, and Shalqizë, the Kocaj–Ura Kakunjë road section is the only through route. It is mostly unpaved; the existing asphalt surface is damaged. Check its condition before setting out, as road conditions can change.
Regional cuisine and other interests
Nearby, the Shpella e Pëllumbave restaurant serves chicken with pilaf as a traditional dish and makes two varieties of raki in-house. If you plan to stop specifically for the raki, ask in advance which varieties are currently made on site. The Sallaku restaurant in Bërzhitë serves traditional dishes and uses local produce; check whether it is currently operating before visiting.
As an agritourism business, Rozmarinë in the surrounding area produces and sells olive oil, wine, raki, honey, jam, cheese, and butter. For sports enthusiasts, the Pjateli shooting sports facility in Bërzhitë has two shooting ranges. The disciplines offered there are skeet, Universal Trap, Percorso di Caccia, Olympic Trap, and Double Trap.
