A former huge anti-nuclear bunker near Linza houses BUNK'ART 1. The exhibition covers Albania's political and military history from 1939 to the end of communism. The building makes the site itself part of the historical experience and draws attention beyond the cityscape to the country's recent history.

History from different perspectives

In the city centre, BUNK'ART 2 focuses on the communist dictatorship, surveillance and the state apparatus of control, including the role of the Ministry of the Interior. The House of Leaves also explores the history of state surveillance, but preserves the original infrastructure and equipment of the former State Security surveillance centre. Postbllok adds to these perspectives with a memorial commemorating political prisoners under the Hoxha regime. Together, these places explore different aspects of the past.

The Et’hem Bey Mosque also brings history and architecture together: it is part of the historic centre and forms an architectural complex with the Clock Tower. Of the eight mosques built in Tirana in the 18th and 19th centuries, it is the only one still visible today; in 1948 it was declared a first-category cultural monument. The Clock Tower dates from the early 19th century and stands near Skanderbeg Square. Cultural events, festivals, exhibitions and artistic activities take place there. The Pyramid, meanwhile, reflects a historical transformation: after 1991, it was converted into an International Cultural Centre.

Collections, the stage and city life

The Archaeological Museum of Tirana takes visitors from prehistory to antiquity through its collections. Exhibits include jewellery, mosaics, coins and other artefacts. The Bektashi Museum offers a different perspective: documents, photographs and original objects convey the history of Bektashism around the world and particularly in Albania. For the performing arts, the National Theatre of Opera, Ballet and Folk Ensemble presents operas, ballets, symphonic concerts and other productions. The Cloud by Sou Fujimoto serves as a venue for modern art and cultural events.

At the New Bazaar, markets selling local products sit alongside craft shops, bars and restaurants. This mix offers a distinctive glimpse into everyday life in Tirana, alongside its museums and historic buildings. Individual businesses may change. Traditional Tirana cuisine includes dishes such as Tirana stew, Tava e kosit and Jufka with chicken; baklava and kadaifi are among the traditional sweets. The city's markets and culinary traditions offer another way to get to know it.

Green landscapes and nearby destinations

Dajti National Park offers a scenic contrast to the city's attractions, with mountain landscapes, dense forests and diverse flora and fauna. Activities available there include hiking, mountain biking, camping and picnicking. At Shëngjergji Waterfall, the focus is on nature walks, hiking, photography, relaxing and picnicking amid green mountain scenery. Access conditions may change; check them before your visit.

Pëllumbas Cave also combines nature and history. It is a natural monument and an area of archaeological interest; inside, you can find stalactites, stalagmites and columns. Nearby Petrelë offers a different view of the landscape: the village lies on a hill above the Erzen and provides views of the Dajti Mountains and the Tirana plain. Its castle dates back to Byzantine times. Local restaurants and guesthouses serve traditional Albanian cuisine made with natural products and regional recipes.

Shëngjergj is a mountain village in the municipality of Tirana, around 40 kilometres east of the capital. It lies on the Erzen and is surrounded by the green mountain landscape of Mali me Gropa. Another scenic option is Skorana Gorge, which you can reach by car via the Tirana–Ibë–Pëllumbas highway. Check road and route conditions before setting out.
