The Mộc Châu Plateau lies at an average elevation of over 1,050 metres above sea level and has a rare temperate microclimate. Mộc Châu is in Sơn La Province, about 200 kilometres from Hanoi; this mountainous destination is also known as the “green pearl” of the Northwest. With highland trails, caves, tea plantations, orchards and waterfalls, the region offers a variety of experiences—from challenging hikes to seasonal insights into cultivation.

Highland Trails and a Cave Landscape

Pha Luong is a high mountain near the border between Vietnam and Laos. Challenging trails lead over rocks and through the jungle to the summit. In the wider destination of Sơn La, the uphill climb also passes through dense forest and reaches an elevation of 2,000 metres; depending on your fitness, it takes one to four hours. From the summit, you can see across the Mộc Châu area and part of Laos. Visibility can vary depending on the weather. Check trail conditions locally.

The On Village's Five Caves cave system consists of five large and small caves with limestone formations shaped by water erosion. You can explore the caves along forest trails. Here, the walk through the forest to the formations is the main attraction, while Pha Luong is defined above all by its challenging climb and views.

Tea and Seasonal Harvests

At the Heart-Shaped Tea Hills, the tea beds are laid out in the shape of a giant heart, creating a distinctive landscape for photos. Visitors can tour tea-processing facilities, learn about growing and processing Oolong tea, and sample it. At O Long Moc Suong Tea Hill, you can take part in the tea harvest and learn about the tea farmers’ work in the fields. Timing depends on the harvest.

At Na Ka Plum Valley, the plum trees bloom from December to February, and the plums ripen from May to July. These periods can vary depending on the weather. During the fruit season, visitors can buy plums directly from the orchard or take part in picking activities. It is best to confirm arrangements at the orchard before your trip.

Forest, Water and More to Discover

At Ban Ang Pine Forest, a clear lake sits amid a forest surrounded by pine trees. You can go for a walk and picnic, row on the lake or cycle through the pine forest. Dai Yem Waterfall plunges from a great height into a green mountain and forest landscape. Visitors can swim there, especially in summer; conditions may vary by season. From the centre of Mộc Châu town, the waterfall can be reached by motorbike or car via National Highway 43. Check road conditions before setting out.

At Happy Land Mộc Châu’s Happy Farm, visitors can observe, care for and play with goats, sheep and rabbits. Moc Chau Island begins at Bach Long Bridge, also called White Dragon Bridge, and includes a path along the mountainside.

Culture in the Sơn La Destination

The wider Sơn La destination is also home to the Hết-Chá Festival of the White Thai, held annually in bản Áng in Mộc Châu. It is a thanksgiving to healers, the heavens, ancestors and spirits. The exact festival dates may vary.
