Đông Hà is the eastern gateway to the East–West Economic Corridor, which connects Laos, Thailand and Myanmar. The city itself can be explored through places with different themes: the river port as a historic transshipment point, memorial sites, traditional communal houses, a museum and the market. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether transport and wartime history, architecture or urban commercial life should be your main focus.

History Along the River and Transport Network

One striking historical landmark is the Đông Hà Military Port. It lies on the south bank of the Hiếu River, beside National Highway 1A and the Đông Hà Bridge, and has been recognised since 2013 as a special national monument within the historic Trường Sơn–Ho Chi Minh Road system. From early 1973 until the liberation of South Vietnam in April 1975, the port served as an important river port and transshipment point: goods were transferred from the sea route to the road network and then onward along the Trường Sơn transport route. Its riverside location and its transport role at the time are therefore closely connected; together, they make the link between water and land transport the port’s central historical theme.

Memorial Sites and Collections

The Quảng Trị Museum is located at 08 Nguyễn Huệ Street in Đông Hà. It displays more than 9,300 documents and artefacts, including nearly 5,000 original objects. These figures give a concrete sense of the collection’s scale and complement the individual historical sites with a look at documents and objects.

The Đường 9 Martyrs’ Cemetery’s two most important artistic and historical structures are a Victory Monument and a ceremonial area. Another preserved relic is Nhà Vòm, in the area of Đông Hà Military Airfield. The aircraft shelter was used particularly as a shelter for helicopters. Both places evoke historical remembrance, but in different forms: one as a memorial complex, the other as a surviving structure.

Communal Houses and Traditional Architectural Forms

At Đình làng Lập Thạch, the focus is on the architecture of the gate: the historic village communal house preserves architectural, artistic, historical and cultural values. Its three-storey brick gate displays traditional features from the Nguyễn era. This clearly defined architectural element offers a concrete way to understand the communal house’s design.

At Đình làng Nghĩa An, the dating and preserved design add further context. The building was designated a national monument on 5 January 1996. Its original foundation is estimated to date from the late 16th to the early 17th century. The described appearance reflects the 1959 restoration: it includes a wooden central section in the style of a nhà rường, with three bays and two side spans, as well as a five-bay front hall with a flat roof. The estimated founding period and restoration date refer to different points in time and help distinguish the stages of the building’s history.

Trade and Getting Your Bearings in the City

Đông Hà Market is an important local trading centre with a diverse range of goods. It is also featured as a culinary stop in a tourist itinerary for Quảng Trị Province. This gives it a different emphasis from the monuments and communal houses: here, trade and its culinary appeal come to the fore. Hoàng Diệu Park, located in Hoàng Diệu, Đông Thanh, Đông Hà, adds another named place within the city to help you find your way around.

The main themes are easy to distinguish when planning your trip: the port, the martyrs’ cemetery and Nhà Vòm point to transport and commemorative history; the communal houses make architectural forms and historical dates tangible; the museum and market offer a different perspective on collections and urban trade. This can help you decide which of Đông Hà’s facets will be of particular interest during your stay.
