Temple history, memorial sites and a landscape dotted with small rocky islands give Biên Hòa a variety of distinctive features. A simple question can help with planning: Would you mainly like to explore religious architecture, learn about historical events, or include experiences in nature as well?

Temples and Architectural History

Chùa Ông was built in 1684 and designated a national historical and cultural relic in 2001. It is considered the earliest Hoa temple built in Nam Bộ. Visitors can admire its distinctive architecture, stone and wood carvings, reliefs and finely crafted ceramic figures with folk-inspired designs. Chùa Ông welcomes visitors for sightseeing and temple visits; check local visitor arrangements in advance.

The annual festival at Chùa Ông may also be worth considering when planning your visit: it takes place from the 10th to the 13th day of the first lunar month. The program includes a ceremony for Quan Thánh Đế Quân, a procession, the release of auspicious cầu, and lion and dragon dances. As the festival dates follow the lunar calendar, check the dates locally for your chosen year.

Chùa Long Thiền and Chùa Đại Giác were built just one year apart: Chùa Long Thiền dates to 1664 and is considered one of the three oldest temples in Đồng Nai; Chùa Đại Giác dates to 1665. Chùa Long Thiền contains many old bronze and wooden statues, as well as antique horizontal plaques and couplets bearing Buddhist and humanist themes. Chùa Đại Giác covers 3,000 square meters and consists of three connected rows of transverse buildings. It also houses a 2.25-meter-tall wooden Amitābha statue. Comparing the two reveals historic temple complexes with distinct architectural and artistic features.

Cultural Sites and History

Văn miếu Trấn Biên draws on the traditional architecture of Vietnamese temples of literature and combines spiritual elements with the natural landscape. As a cultural and educational center, it also hosts regular activities, including ceremonies honoring high-achieving students, báo công ceremonies, incense offerings and programs that pass on traditions. If you would like to attend a particular ceremony, check its date and participation requirements in advance.

Nhà lao Tân Hiệp is closely associated with the prison uprising of December 2, 1956. At the time, 462 cadres and party members were freed, including many patriotic figures. On October 15, 1994, the site was designated a national historical and cultural relic under Decision No. 2754/QĐ-BT. Restoration and redevelopment began in 2011; the complex reopened in 2016 to mark the 60th anniversary of the uprising. The site includes an exhibition house and former prison areas: the weapons depot, the soldiers’ sleeping quarters, a section of the prison foundations and the prison gate.

Another historical trace leads to the Tân Lại archaeological site on the grounds of Đình Tân Lại. Three large rectangular stones were discovered there. They were provisionally identified as parts of ancient temple and tower architecture: some from the Óc-Eo period, from the 1st to the 7th century, and others from the later Óc-Eo period, from the 8th to the 12th century. This provisional identification is an explicit part of the discovery’s history.

Thành cổ Biên Hòa is a destination for sightseeing, historical research and excursions that pass on traditions, particularly to younger generations. After several restorations, the site retains its distinctive architecture and an airy, spacious setting. At Đình Tân Lân, meanwhile, a stately design and architecture strongly influenced by Chinese culture define the site’s character. A traditional ceremony is held there each year on the death anniversary, drawing visitors from the surrounding area; check the specific date locally.

A Different Focus: The Landscape

For those who would like to include landscapes alongside temples and historic sites, the Bửu-Long tourism complex offers a different focus. Small rocky islands lie amid bodies of water covering several dozen hectares. The complex is considered a day-trip destination for independent travelers from Đồng Nai and the Southeast region of Vietnam. When choosing what to see, you can weigh cultural architecture, historical memory and landscapes as distinct interests.
