Fergana offers a range of cultural experiences: central attractions in the city and textile handicrafts in Margilan. For your planning, you can decide whether to focus on destinations in the city center or also learn about the production of silk fabrics.

Culture and Attractions in Fergana

Fergana’s main places to visit include Central Park, the Al-Ferghani Monument, the Regional Museum of Local Lore, the Puppet Theater, the Yangi Chek and Nur-Jomiy mosques, the Russian Drama Theater, Fergana State University, the Officers’ House, and the Church of Sergius of Radonezh. The selection includes a park and monument as well as a museum, theater, religious buildings, and a university. You can prioritize your sightseeing based on whether you are more interested in local history, theater, or architecture, rather than treating all these themes equally.

San’at Saroyi Park is considered a place for walks and bike rides. The Palace of Arts, named after Islam Karimov, is also located in the park. The park and a named cultural building offer two distinct starting points for choosing your destinations.

Textile Craftsmanship in Margilan

Margilan is 25 minutes from Fergana’s administrative center. At the Yodgorlik Factory, visitors can see the handcrafting of Khan-Atlas silk and Adras textiles using the ikat technique; the factory offers tours. Unlike Fergana’s central attractions, the focus here is on textile production. If you are interested in materials and craftsmanship, this offers a complement to the city’s museums, theaters, and religious buildings.

Ferghana Province: A Regional Cultural and Landscape Setting

The broader destination of Ferghana Province offers further distinct cultural and landscape themes. The Fergana Region lies in the south of the Fergana Valley, between the Pamir-Alai and Tian Shan mountain systems. In Rishton, the City of Masters is known as one of Central Asia’s largest centers for producing unique glazed ceramics. The artisans’ center in Rishton District follows the traditional master-apprentice model, offering a distinct insight into how craftsmanship is passed down alongside textile production in Margilan.

Margilan also offers further experiences within the broader regional setting: the international silk festival “Atlas Bayrami” is held there every year. A craft center includes weaving workshops, an exhibition of finished products, a stage, and a studio. Visitors can watch sewing and the application of color to fabrics. The Erkin Vohidov Memorial Museum in Margilan displays exhibits about the life and work of the poet and writer Erkin Vohidov.

For architecture, the regional itinerary leads to Kokand. The Palace of Khudoyar Khan was built in 1871 as the seventh khan’s palace. The Jameh Mosque dates from 1819 to 1822; its porch is surrounded by 98 wooden columns, and it has a minaret. These dates provide a specific timeframe for two different buildings.

The landscape of Ferghana Province also has its own highlights: Shakhimardan is bordered on both sides by the mountain rivers Ak-Su and Kok-Su, which converge to form the Shakhimardan-Sai River. The Vuadil Valley offers foothill landscapes, fertile orchards, and clean air. This regional setting can therefore be explored not only through urban cultural destinations, but also through landscapes and craftsmanship.
