Las Toscas can be viewed through the remembrance of Idea Vilariño and the landscape of the Cañada Las Toscas. The public square around Vilariño’s house, at the corner of Rambla and Calle D, is now a place for gathering and remembrance. Another perspective is offered by the Cañada in the Parque del Plata–Las Toscas municipal area. The town’s cultural points of interest and views of the Cañada are considered at different scales.

Remembering Idea Vilariño

A mosaic honoring Idea Vilariño is also located in Las Toscas. The square and the mosaic serve different purposes: the public square is defined by its current role as a place for gathering and remembrance, while the mosaic pays tribute to Vilariño. In this way, remembrance is connected both with a public place used by the community and with a specific tribute. The mosaic itself exists; however, its restoration was part of a selected project and was proposed as a planned undertaking.

What the project proposed for the square

The selected project “Olas, ideas y canto,” described in 2022, proposed planting trees in the square, creating a platform to serve as a stage for artistic activities, improving lighting and access, and adding a staircase and a viewpoint. A mural honoring prominent figures in local culture was also planned. The proposals combine several aspects of the square’s design: planting trees and adding a viewpoint incorporate the landscape, while the platform and mural provide an artistic and cultural focus. Improvements to lighting and access, as well as the proposed staircase, add further elements to the design for the square. The planned restoration of the existing mosaic is also part of this undertaking.

The Cañada in the municipal area

The Cañada Las Toscas has been described as a public place of ecological, landscape, and cultural value for residents of the Parque del Plata–Las Toscas municipal area. Information boards have been installed along the watercourse to inform visitors about its ecological and historical significance. This adds another perspective alongside the remembrance of Vilariño: the Cañada is viewed both as a landscape and in terms of its ecological and historical significance.
