Taylor offers a range of ways to spend your visit: a museum with historical connections, routes through the city, and parks with a variety of amenities. Recurring events take place throughout the year as well. For planning, it helps to consider permanent attractions and seasonal dates separately. That way, you can decide whether history, nature and recreational activities, or a particular event will shape your visit.
Local History and Architecture
The Moody Museum is the childhood home of Dan Moody, considered the youngest governor of Texas. Heritage Square is located in Taylor’s historic downtown. It has a walking path and historical markers. The square also features an amphitheater, a splash pad, a public art display, shade structures, and landscaped grounds.
The Architectural Walking Tour offers another perspective on the city’s architecture. It is self-guided and covers more than 25 buildings. While Heritage Square brings together a single location, a path, and historical markers, the tour focuses on a larger number of buildings. These are two different ways to explore Taylor’s history and architecture.
Parks and Outdoor Activities
Taylor has more than eight miles of hiking and biking trails across five major parks: Bull Branch, Murphy, Heritage Square, Fannie Robinson, and Taylor Regional. Murphy Park offers a specific connection to local wildlife for birdwatchers: visitors can spot Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, and Green Night Herons, among other birds.
Pierce Park is home to the 50/50 Skatepark, a 10,000-square-foot facility for BMX riders and skateboarders. Another sporting attraction is Mustang Creek Golf Course, which has a hundred-year operating history. The options range from hiking and biking trails to birdwatching, skateboarding, and golf; the activities mentioned are spread across different parks and locations in Taylor.
Events Throughout the Year
Taylor Fest is a recurring spring festival in downtown Taylor. It takes place on the first weekend in May; the program can vary from year to year. The Heritage Square Farmer's Market also takes place weekly, year-round. It offers locally grown produce, responsibly raised meats, and handmade goods. Vendors’ offerings may change seasonally.
In the fall, the annual Main Street Car Show takes place in downtown Taylor. It features more than 300 classic, antique, and exotic cars, trucks, motorcycles, and military vehicles. In December, the City Christmas Parade follows: on the first Saturday of the month, it travels along Main Street from Murphy Park to Heritage Square.
The dates fall in different seasons: Taylor Fest is in spring, the Car Show in fall, and the parade in December. If you want to plan your visit around an event, it’s best to check the specific date in the events calendar. This helps you keep track of the recurring dates and the program for each event.
