Parks and Getting There

Hondo’s park system includes 107 acres of parkland spread across 14 city parks. All have picnic tables, barbecue grills, and playground equipment. The area and number of parks give an idea of the scale of the park offerings; their shared amenities make picnicking and spending time outdoors natural options. One specific point of reference is Nature Trail Park at the intersection of Castro and FM 462.

South Texas Regional Airport at Hondo is accessible via U.S. 90 and FM 462. The terminal is accessible around the clock and has showers. The airport also offers a pilots’ lounge, an escort vehicle, free Wi-Fi, and four active runways.

Golf and Recreational Activities

Hondo Golf Course is family-oriented. Its format is defined by nine holes and a par of 36; its flat links-style layout, with trees, 13 bunkers, and no water hazards, describes its design. This makes it possible to distinguish the course’s size from its profile. The course was built in July 1954 at Hondo Air Base.

Programs at the Rick Taylor Recreation Center include youth sports leagues, holiday and recreational camps, special 5K runs, and open gym times for basketball and volleyball. While the parks are described by their shared amenities, the center adds organized activities and gym time to the options. As individual programs may change, check in advance to see what is offered during your stay.

History and Architecture

In the 1840s, the first permanent settlers arrived in the area around Hondo with Henri Castro. The original settlement from which Hondo developed was located on El Arroyo Hondo; the creek was named by the Spanish. In the early 20th century, Hondo developed into a trading center and cotton shipping point.

A historical marker about Mission Valley is located in City Park North on FM 462 in Hondo. Mission Valley was an African American community that emerged on the south bank of Hondo Creek after emancipation. Before 1881, residents on both banks of Hondo Creek established shared facilities, including a church and school, which were within walking distance of both settlements.

The area’s architectural history offers another perspective. The Raye Theater was built in 1938 in the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne styles. These style names give architecture enthusiasts a specific point of interest alongside the themes of settlement and trade. The timeline runs from the settlement of the area in the 1840s, through Hondo’s role as a trading center in the early 20th century, to the construction of the golf course in 1954 at Hondo Air Base; the history of settlement, trade, and recreation spans different periods in the town’s history.
