Castroville brings together early settlement history and church chronicles with the landscape along the Medina River and activities in Castroville Regional Park. Historic homes, buildings, and churches showcase different aspects of local history; in the park, trails and a butterfly garden take center stage. Those planning a stay can enjoy both cultural attractions and opportunities to spend time outdoors.

Architecture and Local History

Castroville has 96 so-called settlement or pioneer homes and buildings dating from 1844 to 1920. The Historic Walking Tour includes more than 50 homes and commercial buildings originally constructed between the mid- and late 19th century. These descriptions emphasize different things: the tour covers buildings from a narrower period, while the description of the homes and buildings spans a longer period.

The Biry-Ahr Property is home to the Castro Colonies Living History Center. The Biry house is an example of early Alsatian immigrant architecture. These offer two distinct ways to explore history: a center dedicated to the history of the Castro Colonies and a specific example of the architecture of early Alsatian immigrants.

The Landmark Inn, on the banks of the Medina River, also tells stories of migration, industry, and preservation in Texas. The five-acre property is situated beneath tall trees along the river. On September 3, 1844, 27 people founded the European-influenced village of Castroville here. The town’s founding, its riverside location, and the Landmark Inn’s historical themes give this site a distinct place in the town’s history.

Churches and Their Timelines

Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded on January 29, 1852. Construction of its church building began in 1853; congregation members provided stone, sand, and lumber for the project. In 1857, Pastor Oefinger held Castroville’s first public school classes in the building. These dates connect the founding of the church with the construction of the building and its early use for public education.

St. Louis Catholic Church marks a different point in time: its current church building was constructed in 1870 and today serves as a Catholic church in Castroville. Those interested in building and congregational history can explore two churches and different periods of history.

Trails and Activities in the Regional Park

Castroville Regional Park offers more than a dozen trails for biking, jogging, and hiking. It also features a unique butterfly garden, giving the park a connection to nature as well as opportunities for exercise. The listed activities involve different ways of getting around, so the park appeals not only to people who want to explore on foot.

The Tour de Castroville Walk/Run/Ride takes place there annually. This event adds a specific date in the yearly calendar to the park’s ongoing offerings. Since event dates can change, check the dates if you’re planning your stay around the event.
