A paved 300-yard path leads from the Welcome Center to the Dig Shelter on tours of Waco Mammoth National Monument, where mammoth fossils have been preserved in their original position in the bone bed. This makes the discovery site itself the focus of the tour. Waco also offers different ways to explore history, nature and public art, from the Texas Ranger Museum and the cultural history of Central Texas to wildlife and trails in Cameron Park. Which topics you combine depends on whether you’re more interested in a particular historical perspective, natural science, sports history or wildlife.

Museums and History from Different Perspectives

The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in Waco is the official museum, hall of fame and repository of the Texas Rangers. The Texas Ranger Museum opened in the park in 1968 as an educational attraction, using the history of the Rangers to also tell the story of Texas. Both the Rangers and their role in the state’s history are therefore central to the museum.

Sports history has its own place, too: the Texas Sports Hall of Fame offers a direct look at the people and moments that have shaped sports in Texas. Founded in 1951, it was the first statewide sports hall of fame in the United States. Its focus on influential people and events differs from the history of the Texas Rangers.

The Dr Pepper Museum is housed in Waco’s Artesian Manufacturing and Bottling Company building, constructed in 1906. It is considered the only nonprofit museum in the country devoted to the entire soft drink industry. Its scope therefore extends beyond a single brand, offering a distinct perspective on beverage history.

The Mayborn Museum Complex focuses on the natural sciences and cultural history of Central Texas. Admission includes the Governor Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village, where nine wood-frame buildings bring an 1890s community to life. If you’d like to visit both, note that admission to the Mayborn Museum Complex includes the Historic Village. As admission policies may change, check them before your visit. Another historical perspective is offered by the Cultural Crossroads exhibit, with its reconstruction of the façade of the Waco Suspension Bridge.

Wildlife, Trails and Art

Cameron Park Zoo is home to more than 1,700 animals representing 300 species. The Asian Forest is home to critically endangered orangutans, Sumatran tigers and Komodo dragons. The zoo also features naturalistic habitats and close-up animal encounters. The figures convey the breadth of the collection; the Asian Forest is one of its named themed areas.

In Cameron Park, hiking and biking trails follow the River Trail and climb to 100-foot bluffs overlooking the rivers. The trails combine outdoor activity with scenic viewpoints. To choose a focus that suits you, you can compare the park trails with museum visits and wildlife viewing: one emphasizes the landscape, while the other focuses on a themed collection or exhibit.

The Waco Sculpture Zoo adds 27 animal-themed works of art by leading artists from across the United States to this selection. You can view the works from University Parks Drive, the River Walk and from the water. The animal theme connects this collection of art with the zoo, while the viewing locations mentioned offer different perspectives on the works.
