A 0.5-mile loop trail, a renovated depot and a library program for the youngest children showcase different sides of Hewitt. Each offers a different focus: exercise and play, railroad history, or reading together. When looking for a hotel in Hewitt, these themes can help guide your stay; consider which one should shape your travel plans.

Parks and Activities in Hewitt

Hewitt Park is located along Castleman Creek and features a 0.5-mile loop trail and a picnic area. Children can climb and play at the Adventure Playground. This makes it easy to choose an activity based on specific interests: take a lap on the trail, spend time in the play area, or pause at the picnic area. The Hewitt Disc Golf Course is also laid out according to PDGA rules of play. For those interested in disc golf, this provides a specific indication of how the course is designed.

Warren Park offers a different focus. It is located on the banks of Castleman Creek, just off Old Temple Road, and features playgrounds and a covered pavilion. Compared with Hewitt Park, which is described as having a loop trail and picnic area, the pavilion is a distinctive feature of Warren Park. When choosing between the parks, you can consider whether a walk on the trail or a covered pavilion is more important to you.

The Depot and Local History

The Hewitt Depot is located at the corner of 3rd Street and Warren and has been extensively renovated. The Greater Hewitt Chamber of Commerce currently operates out of the depot. This brings a historic designation and a present-day institutional use together in one specific building.

Hewitt was founded in 1882, when the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad built the section of track between Hillsboro and Taylor. The town was named after George A. Hewitt, a railroad executive. The town’s founding is therefore connected to the construction of the railroad line, while its name refers to a person. This distinction helps keep the two aspects of local history separate.

Reading and Library Programs

The Hewitt Public Library’s “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” program promotes parent-child bonding and reading for newborns, infants and toddlers. Registration is available at the library’s front desk or through an internet-enabled device. Participants can take home library backpacks filled with books selected in advance. For travelers with young children who want to plan time for reading together, the program offers a specific point of interest.

Visitors to the Hewitt Public Library can apply for a library card with a valid form of identification and proof of current address. The library is also open to people who live outside the city limits. Library cardholders can borrow passes to select local museums for seven days. This borrowing program is a separate offering from the reading program for young children.

A Dated Event: the StoryWalk

At the opening celebration of the StoryWalk in Hewitt on Saturday, March 21, 2026, an offering that combines reading, exercise and time outdoors was introduced.
