Granbury offers several distinct highlights: the historic center is home to the Hood County Courthouse, Historic Granbury Square, and the Opera House; on Lake Granbury, you’ll find City Beach and public fishing piers. There are also parks and a Hike-&-Bike Trail with signs about regional history. You can choose your accommodation and plan your visits based on whether architecture, theater, water, or outdoor history matters most to your trip.

Courthouse, Square, and Historic Buildings

The Hood County Courthouse is at the heart of Granbury’s historic downtown. The three-story limestone building is designed in the French Second Empire style. It has been recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark since 1970, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974, and designated a State Antiquities Landmark since 1981. Its materials, architecture, and three designations from different years give the courthouse a clear place in Granbury’s local history.

Historic Granbury Square also has a special place in history: it was the first courthouse square in Texas to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A self-guided downtown walking tour takes you around the square. You can get the tour guide at the Visitor Center or download it. This gives you a practical way to explore the square using a guided description, without requiring an organized tour.

The Granbury Opera House was originally built in 1886 and extensively renovated in the style of its era. It is home to the Granbury Theatre Company, which stages eight to ten productions over the course of the year. The program may change; if you’d like to plan a visit to a performance, check the dates for your travel period.

The Granbury Railroad Depot is another part of the area’s historic heritage. Built in 1914, it is a preserved symbol of railroad travel to and from Granbury. It is also significant to the history, architecture, and culture of the region. The courthouse, square, opera house, and depot offer different perspectives, from downtown architecture and theater to railroad history.

Lake Granbury, Parks, and Events

Granbury City Beach is on Lake Granbury in the heart of the city. Amenities include a splash park and picnic pavilions; kayak rentals are available in summer, though availability may change. There are also public fishing piers on Lake Granbury. The lake offers a range of water-related activities, while the fishing piers and City Beach are separate amenities.

Shanley Park is a landscaped park in the historic downtown. Its features include fountains, paths, bridges, and a winding stream. The park is also used for concerts and festivals throughout the year. Its landscaping and role as an event venue make it a different destination from the historic buildings around the square; if a particular concert or festival matters to your trip, check the dates.

Trails and Getting Around

The Moments In Time Hike & Bike Trail is an eight-foot-wide concrete path. It extends for 2.93 miles from Granbury Airport to Hewlett Park. There are parking areas and restrooms along the trail. Several informational signs cover the early history of Granbury and Hood County. The trail combines a longer route with historical topics, while the downtown walking tour goes around Historic Granbury Square. The two options differ in both length and focus.

Granbury Trolley service on weekends may also be useful when coordinating accommodation with visits downtown. The free trolleys travel between hotels, bed and breakfasts, and downtown on a six-mile route. As operating details may change, check the schedule before your trip and plan to use the service on a weekend.

Wine Tastings as Another Highlight

D’Vine Wine Granbury offers guided wine tastings in the form of wine flights. Along with the theater program, historic sites, and activities on Lake Granbury, this adds another dimension to Granbury beyond the architecture of downtown.
