Houston can be explored through a wide range of themes: space exploration history, greenways, animal and natural habitats, and art. The diversity is especially clear in how different the individual experiences are—from historic control rooms to a lake where you can kayak.

Discover Space Exploration History

Space Center Houston is the official visitor center of NASA’s Johnson Space Center. At Independence Plaza, visitors can enter the shuttle replica Independence. It is mounted on the historic original shuttle carrier aircraft, NASA 905. This puts the shuttle and carrier aircraft together at the center of this exhibit area.

The history of the missions is also part of the visit: at Historic Mission Control, NASA directed Gemini and Apollo missions, including the first lunar landing mission. A guided tram tour takes visitors through NASA’s Johnson Space Center and offers insights into astronaut training facilities, historic spacecraft and modern research laboratories. If you plan to take the tour, check in advance whether it is offered on your chosen date. You should also check the latest operating details for Space Center Houston before your trip.

Trails, Green Spaces and Water

At Buffalo Bayou Park, visitors can get around on foot, by bicycle or on the water. There are different ways to get active; current conditions and possible closures may change. For specific planning, it is a good idea to check the latest trail and park notices.

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department maintains an extensive trail system with more than 163.12 miles of trails. The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center offers a different, specific measure: it covers 155 acres and is an urban nature sanctuary on the western edge of Memorial Park. The center also offers two miles of accessible trails. The figures refer to different offerings: the two miles describe accessible trails in the arboretum, while the larger mileage figure refers to the department’s trail system. Check the latest trail information for the arboretum before your visit.

The animal and natural habitats also offer distinct experiences. The Kathrine G. McGovern Texas Wetlands at the Houston Zoo brings bald eagles, whooping cranes and American alligators together in a lush wetland. The Galápagos Islands exhibit, by contrast, immerses visitors in an environment recreating the archipelago’s unique landscapes and marine habitats.

Discovery Green offers another way to enjoy the water: kayaking is available on its one-acre lake, subject to park rules. The park and Buffalo Bayou Park therefore offer different ways to spend time outdoors—from exploring on foot, by bicycle or on the water to kayaking on a lake.

Museums and Art

The Houston Museum District spans nine square miles and includes museums as well as arts and cultural organizations. Bayou Bend offers a specific look at American art history: this house museum of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) is dedicated to American decorative arts and paintings.

At Bayou Bend, you can choose between docent-led and self-guided tours. If you prefer a particular format, check the available tour options before your visit. This lets you plan your museum visit with a specific focus, without conflating it with the city’s other cultural and nature offerings.
