Hardeeville brings together several themes for an exploratory trip: the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge offers opportunities for wildlife watching, historic railroad technology tells the story of the timber industry, and the Savannah River adds river views and fishing opportunities. Sports and recreational activities are also part of what the area has to offer.

Nature at the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge

The visitor center for the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge is located at 694 Beech Hill Lane in Hardeeville. The refuge was established in 1927, especially for wintering waterfowl and other migratory birds. Today, it offers opportunities for wildlife watching year-round. Its habitats include freshwater tidal marshes and bottomland hardwood forests—two distinct landscape types within the refuge.

Visitors can explore the refuge using the 4.5-mile Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive and its trails, which are open daily from sunrise to sunset. Individual areas may be closed when posted. This time frame provides a practical basis for planning; before your visit, check whether there are any notices about closed areas. Those hoping to spot wildlife will find opportunities here in every season, while the refuge’s history particularly highlights the protection of wintering waterfowl.

Local History and Railroad Technology

The Argent Lumber Company Engine Number 7 is a wood-fired narrow-gauge steam locomotive built around 1910. It was used to transport timber from the forest to the mill. This connection between locomotive, forest and mill also makes the historic artifact a reminder of the former timber industry. Argent train No. 7 stands next to the Old City Hall on Main Street in Hardeeville.

Another link to the city’s history is Hardeeville City Hall and Community Campus: it is an exact replica of the former Consolidated School. A specific date is part of the story of Hardeeville Memorial Park, too. The park officially opened to the public on May 25, 2026; veterans and first responders were honored at the opening. In Hardeeville, themes of technology, architecture and remembrance thus sit side by side.

River Views and Activities on the Water

Millstone Landing offers views of the Savannah River and access to fishing opportunities for boaters and anglers. Sergeant Jasper Park offers a different way to enjoy the water, with opportunities for kayaking and canoeing. The activities differ accordingly: river views and fishing at Millstone Landing, kayaking or canoeing at the park.

Sergeant Jasper Park is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., except on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Check the opening hours before you travel. If you plan to visit, it helps to match the available time with your planned activities rather than assuming your visit to the park can be as long as you like.

Sports and Recreation

Richard Gray Recreational Complex brings together several options: multi-purpose sports fields, an off-leash dog park, a walking trail and fishing ponds. Hardeeville Recreational Center adds an indoor track and fitness facilities. The recreational options therefore differ both in how they are used and in whether they are outdoors or indoors.

When planning your trip, you can consider wildlife watching, city history, water activities and sports as distinct areas of focus.
