Lostwood National Wildlife Refuge includes one of the largest publicly managed areas of northern mixed-grass prairie in the United States. The landscape serves as a breeding ground and stopover for migratory birds on their long journeys. Birdwatching is one of the activities at the refuge—bringing together an expansive prairie habitat and a specific reason to observe nature closely.

Those who want to explore on foot can take the 7.5-mile Prairie Hiking Trail in the refuge. The loop is maintained by the refuge and designated as a National Scenic Trail. The trail is subject to seasonal schedules; check these before you set out. Lostwood National Wildlife Refuge is on Highway 8, 20 minutes north of Stanley.

Prairie, Views and Lake Sakakawea

Crow Flies High State Recreation Area combines views of the Four Bears Bridge and Lake Sakakawea with a connection to history. Interpretive signs explain the area’s significance to local history and the Lewis and Clark expeditions. When the water level in Lake Sakakawea is low, the flooded town of Sanish may also be visible from there. This view of Sanish depends on water levels being low enough.

Campsite details may change; check the information when planning your trip. Parshall Bay Campground is on the northeast side of Van Hook Arm and offers views of Lake Sakakawea. From spring through fall, it presents an extensive program of entertainment, art, musical performances and community events.

Wabek Consolidated School was established in 1917 through the consolidation of two one-room schools. Paul Broste Rock Museum offers a different perspective on history and collecting. Opened in 1966, the building was constructed from natural granite quarried nearby. The museum houses Paul Broste’s collection of rocks and specimens from around the world; its other noted features include topiary trees and an Infinity Room. The building material, collection and distinctive features of the rooms each offer a different point of interest.
