Almost the entire surface of Cavalier County is gently rolling to hilly. Beneath it lie sediments deposited during the last glacial advance into the Rendezvous Region about 12,000 years ago. In Cavalier County, gentle landforms meet a geological heritage that reaches back to the Ice Age.
Landscape and Geological History
At the eastern edge of the county, the Pembina Escarpment marks the eastern boundary of the glaciated plain. The Pembina River has cut through glacial sediments and Cretaceous bedrock, shaping the Pembina Gorge, one of North Dakota’s most scenic areas. The state’s oldest rocks are also exposed in the gorge. The contrast between rolling terrain, a prominent escarpment and a deeply incised river valley brings the geological history to life: glaciers deposited sediments, the river eroded them and exposed older rocks.
Discover Culture and History
In Dresden, the Cavalier County Museum displays artifacts from a bygone era in the buildings of its museum complex. This gives the view of the past a tangible, physical form: the exhibits are spread across the complex’s buildings rather than conveyed solely through a narrative.
The Cavalier County Courthouse in Langdon offers a different architectural accent. The single-story building was designed by Foss and Co. and built in 1957. Its design draws on ideas from Mid-Century Modern architecture. Alongside the museum’s historic artifacts, there is also a building whose design and construction date provide a precise point of reference in time.
The history of the Cold War is another topic: RSL 3 includes a 16-silo Sprint missile field and is associated with the National Register of Historic Places. Private or guided public tours are available. This makes the site an opportunity to explore a chapter of military history without reducing the facility to its historical classification.
Activities Between Park, Water and Golf
Frost Fire Park is in eastern Cavalier County. Its attractions include a ski area and a live theater production in summer—two very different reasons to include the park in your travel plans. If you want to attend the summer production, check the specific performance dates in advance.
Mount Carmel Dam Recreation Area offers camping, fishing, boating and water skiing. Mount Carmel Dam itself is an earth-fill dam on the Little South Pembina River. From Langdon, the directions are: 9 miles north, 2 miles east, another 2 miles north and 1 mile east. Check road conditions before you travel.
Those interested in fishing will also find clear guidance at Langdon City Pond: rainbow trout are stocked there annually, and there is a fishing pier. For golf, Langdon Country Club has a nine-hole course two miles north of Langdon. This lets you consider water activities and a round of golf as separate options without having to combine them into a single outing.
Nearby, you’ll also find Cavalier Forest Nature Trail in Cavalier City Park. The trail is used for hiking, biking, bird and wildlife watching, and photography. This combination makes it a good choice if you’d like to explore different ways of observing nature during your visit.
