The Stutsman County Courthouse tells a story not only through its age: built in 1883, it is the oldest surviving courthouse in North Dakota and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At the same time, it is the only surviving building in the state directly connected with the activities of the statehood movement of the 1880s. The courthouse offers a tangible introduction to the region’s history.

Historic Sites and Discoveries

Fort Seward also represents a clearly defined period in the past: it was an active military fort from 1872 to 1877. The Fort Seward Historic Site houses an interpretive center with artifacts from archaeological excavations at the site. A plaque on the Veterans Memorial Wall lists 19 North Dakotans who received the Congressional Medal of Honor. The Veterans Memorial Wall and Walk also includes a paved path with bricks honoring former members of the military.

At Frontier Village, original buildings from North Dakota’s pioneer settlements are used as historic exhibit spaces. They include the 1880 Northern Pacific Railroad Depot, as well as a pioneer school, a church, and a bank. The World's Largest Buffalo Monument has also stood there since 1959, overlooking Jamestown. The General Store at Frontier Village serves homemade ice cream and pie—a complement to the historical exhibits that also offers a glimpse into everyday life.

The Stutsman County Museum features historical exhibits across four floors of the Lutz Mansion. The Talking Trail offers a different way to explore: this self-guided audio experience includes 70 stops in the Jamestown area, including Frontier Village, the North American Bison Discovery Center, the Stutsman County Courthouse, and St. James Basilica. This way, you can encounter history and culture not just in one place, but through a range of subjects across the Jamestown area.

The Stutsman County Museum’s Front Porch Chats explore Jamestown’s pioneer history and take place on Sundays at 2 p.m. from June through August. Since the schedule may change, it’s best to check the specific dates. Hansen Arts Park offers a different emphasis: its garden and green space combine mosaic benches and sculptural elements with a main stage.

Nature, Trails, and Water

For birdwatching, Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge offers something special: more than 250 bird species have been documented there over the years. During the annual spring courtship ritual, two prairie chicken viewing blinds are available by reservation. This seasonal opportunity differs from the broader range of species documented at the refuge over the years.

Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge is home to one of the largest nesting colonies of American white pelicans in North America; nearly one-third of the continental population of these birds nests there. Of the refuge’s 4,385 acres, all but 230 acres are designated as Wilderness Area, which limits access. As of September 5, 2026, Pass Road was closed until further notice due to unsafe road conditions. Check the current status before driving there. The Outdoor Wildlife Learning Site (OWLS) also serves as an outdoor learning space for conservation, explaining why habitats and the protection of wildlife populations matter.

Trails and water offer different ways to explore, too. The trail network in the Jamestown area spans more than 38 miles; Jamestown has eight maintained trails with varying elevation changes, lengths, and terrain, ranging from beginner to more challenging routes. When choosing a trail, it’s worth considering its length and terrain rather than looking only at the network’s total mileage. You can kayak on the James River from two access points. Pipestem Reservoir offers a contrasting landscape, with about 820 acres of water and more than 14 miles of shoreline.

For travel to Jamestown, the intersection of Interstate 94 and US Highway 281 is a clear landmark: Jamestown is located at this intersection. Together with the historic sites, trails, and refuges, this gives you a range of trip-planning options—from statehood history to birdwatching and outdoor activities.
