Greene County brings together architectural and historical themes with recreational opportunities on Contentnea Creek. In Snow Hill, the Historic District, examples of various architectural styles and a walking tour shape the cultural offerings; Hookerton adds fishing, canoeing and kayaking. The name Snow Hill also refers to the creek: it derives from its historic banks of white sand.
Architecture and culture in Snow Hill
The Snow Hill Historic District features examples of Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Period Cottage, Tudor Revival, Minimal Traditional and Ranch styles. This range of architectural styles makes architecture a focus in its own right: the district is not limited to a single form. Snow Hill also offers a walking tour of the Snow Hill Historic District. West Harper Street lies within the district, a quiet residential street with mature trees and well-kept homes and properties. Alongside the examples of architectural styles, the character of a residential street is another detail of the area.
The Greene County Museum offers a variety of programs and exhibits throughout the year, free to the public. The cultural offerings also include the annual Gospel Fest, featuring performances by gospel artists from Greene County. The two offerings differ in frequency: the museum has programs and exhibits throughout the year, while the festival takes place annually. If you’d like to plan your trip around the Gospel Fest, check the specific event dates in advance.
Nooherooka and the history of the Tuscarora War
The Fort Neyuherú:kę Monument, known in English as Nooherooka, commemorates the last battle of the Tuscarora War in 1713. Nooherooka was the site of a decisive battle in the war from March 20 to 23, 1713; 950 people were killed or captured. The Fort Nooherooka Site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.
The historic Nooherooka marker is located on NC 58 at SR 1058, northwest of Snow Hill. Its location provides another point of reference when planning a visit to this part of the county.
Hookerton: Local history and Contentnea Creek
Hookerton combines local history with activities on the water. It has cemeteries and family burial plots that are more than 100 years old. Hookerton Recreation Park was established in 1974. Fishing is available on Contentnea Creek near Hookerton, and there are two boat ramps in Hookerton for canoeing and kayaking. A quieter historical perspective on the town and recreation on the water thus appeal to different interests.
Sports and recreation in the county
The Greene County Sports Complex includes three baseball fields, a football field, a soccer field, a playground, picnic areas and walking trails. The complex’s TRACK Trail is 1.5 miles long. The facilities range from ball and team sports to a designated trail and picnic areas. Greene County’s recreational sports leagues also include Buddy Ball for people with disabilities.
The Greene County Wellness Center has different facilities: a gymnasium, three batting cages, a stage, a workout room, two small classrooms and one large classroom. The workout rooms are free to use. The center is also intended to host recreational basketball games, travel basketball tournaments and other activities. Compared with the Sports Complex and its outdoor facilities, the Wellness Center brings together a variety of rooms and a gymnasium; both offer different options for planning recreational activities.
