Badin Lake is largely undeveloped on the Stanly County side; Lake Tillery lies on the county’s eastern edge. These two lakes offer a first glimpse of the diverse discoveries Stanly County has in store.

Lakes, Rivers and Nature

Badin Lake is suited to recreation, water sports and fishing. There are public beaches and swimming areas along the lake. This means that on-water activities and swimming opportunities are available at the same body of water. Parts of Morrow Mountain State Park and Uwharrie National Forest border Lake Tillery. Bald eagles are spotted from the lake; sightings vary.

The Rocky River Blueway offers opportunities for extended canoe and kayak trips on calm, flat water. A section of the Blueway is characterized by Piedmont floodplain forest habitat, where more than 50 bird species are native. In Norwood, there is a canoe and kayak access point on the Rocky River at the border between Stanly County and Anson County. Alongside the lakes, river landscapes also invite exploration, revealing their appeal through paddling or observing nature.

Trails for Different Activities

The trails also differ in specific ways, including length, difficulty and permitted use. The Three Rivers Nature Trail is 1.0 mile long, easy and designated for hiking only. At 2.6 miles, the Morrow Mountain Trail is longer and rated as a moderately difficult hiking trail. The 17.3-mile Long Loop Bridle Trail is also moderately difficult, but is designated for both horseback riding and hiking. These details make it easier to choose between a short, easy trail and longer routes; the Long Loop also offers the option of riding it on horseback.

The Roger F. Snyder Greenway in Albemarle offers a different kind of trail: it is paved, nearly flat and intended for walking, running and cycling. Its description also includes various access points for residents and pedestrians. This sets the Greenway apart from trails designated for hiking only, without requiring visitors to choose a particular way of getting around for their entire stay.

Morrow Mountain is considered one of the highest peaks in the Uwharries. The Kron House is a highlight of Morrow Mountain State Park. These natural and cultural attractions come together in Stanly County: on one hand, there are trails and nature; on the other, named historic places and collections.

Cultural History in Museums and Townscapes

The Badin Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The main gallery of the Stanly County Museum offers a broad view of the past, covering the county’s cultural history over more than 10,000 years. The Oakboro Regional Museum of History has its own focus with the exhibition “Ancient Life of the Rocky River: Early American Artifacts.”

Oakboro’s townscape also tells the story of its development. The downtown area was revitalized through the renovation and restoration of buildings constructed in the 1920s and 1930s. The Oakboro Music Hall hosts bluegrass concerts featuring nationally known artists. A visit to Oakboro can therefore combine architectural history and music, while the museums offer other ways to explore the region’s history.

Local Discoveries

In Albemarle, Uwharrie Vineyards has a visitor area with a wine-tasting bar and gift shop. This stop adds a local culinary experience to the themes of nature and history. Together, the lakes, trails, museums and places such as Oakboro offer different starting points for exploring Stanly County according to your own interests.
