A 315-foot freestanding rock spire gives Chimney Rock in Chimney Rock State Park its name. The park is in Rutherford County and offers views of Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure. The rock landscape here is more than just a backdrop: several trails cross very different types of terrain, leading to the summit or to a waterfall.

Rock Landscapes and Hiking Trails

Chimney Rock State Park has ten hiking trails with varying levels of difficulty. The Outcroppings Trail climbs stairs and passes viewpoints through an almost vertical boulder field to the summit of Chimney Rock. Another gently ascending trail along Hickory Nut Gorge leads to the base of a 404-foot waterfall. From there, you can look up at the cliffs above.

The landscape also includes longer connections: the Weed Patch Mountain Trail connects Eagle Rock in Chimney Rock State Park with Buffalo Creek Park near Rumbling Bald Resort. Access conditions for this route and the trails in Buffalo Creek Park can change; check the latest information before your trip.

Trails of Different Lengths

The route lengths show just how varied the trails are. The Thermal Belt Rail Trail runs 13.5 miles from Gilkey to Forrest Hunt Elementary and passes through five communities, including Ruth, Spindale, Rutherfordton and Forest City. For a shorter outing, there’s the Purple Martin Greenway: the paved path is two miles long, ten feet wide, and connects Kiwanis Park with Crestview Park.

Buffalo Creek Park has a 3.5-mile trail for hikers and cyclists. Along the way, there are views of Lake Lure, Bald Mountain Lake and Young’s Mountain. This makes it possible to distinguish routes by length, surface and the specific viewpoints mentioned, without reducing the different routes to a single way of getting around.

Lake Lure: Wildlife and Boating

Wildlife found in the Lake Lure area includes white-tailed deer, beavers, bobcats, foxes, groundhogs and raccoons. Turtles, wild turkeys, Canada geese, ducks and coots are also among the species mentioned. Birds include bald eagles, ospreys, hawks and peregrine falcons.

The marina at Lake Lure offers rentals of boats, canoes and kayaks, as well as sightseeing boat tours on the lake. Operations may vary by season, so check in advance what is currently available. For visitors who prefer to explore along the shore, the 3.5-mile trail in Buffalo Creek Park offers another way to include Lake Lure and the named viewpoints in a trip. Access to Rumbling Bald is free; check the current access conditions before your visit.

Gold Rush History and Regional Museums

The Bechtler House was home to Christopher Bechtler, who is credited with minting the first U.S. one-dollar gold coin. The house displays period artifacts and exhibits that offer a glimpse into the 1830s. It also serves as the headquarters of the NC Gold Trail, which connects more than 27 counties with historical significance from North Carolina’s Gold Rush.

The Rutherford County Farm & History Museum in Forest City offers another perspective on the county’s history, showcasing its agricultural heritage. Those interested in more recent history and interactive exhibits will find 14 exhibit areas at KidSenses in Rutherfordton. They are designed for children from infancy through age ten.

Practical Information
