From the overlooks in Mount Jefferson State Natural Area, the view reaches as far as Tennessee; Luther Rock is another overlook. The protected area also reveals Ashe County from a different perspective: more than 700 plant species grow there, including Dutchman's pipevine. Sweeping panoramas meet a specifically named plant life—a compelling introduction for anyone interested in landscapes and nature.
Mountain Views, Rural Life, and River
The Big Horse Creek Scenic Byway offers a different perspective. It runs 17.9 miles from the intersection of N.C. 194 and N.C. 88 in Warrensville to the Virginia state line. In Lansing in particular, the route showcases rural life in the mountains of Ashe County. While the overlooks at Mount Jefferson direct the view toward Tennessee, the scenic byway puts rural life at the center. Its endpoints and stated length give this perspective a clearly defined geographic scope.
The New River also offers a distinct connection to the landscape: New River State Park has seven access points along the river, which is designated a National Wild and Scenic River. Together with the mountain views and the rural scenic byway, this creates not one single landscape, but a progression between overlook, route, and river.
Museums, Churches, and Art
In Jefferson, the Museum of Ashe County History is located in the historic courthouse dating from 1904. Its Virginia Creeper exhibit includes a 30-foot-long HO-scale diorama. The historic building and the railroad diorama offer different points of interest: one is anchored by its year of construction, the other by its subject, length, and scale. In this way, Jefferson’s history is paired with an exhibit on a specific regional topic.
Two churches offer further points of reference for art and architectural history. St. Mary's Episcopal Church was built near West Jefferson in 1905. It houses Ben Long's frescoes Mary Great with Child, John the Baptist, and The Mystery of Faith. Holy Trinity Episcopal Church is in Glendale Springs and was built in 1901; it features a life-size depiction of the Last Supper. The subjects differ notably: three named frescoes at St. Mary's and a life-size depiction of the Last Supper at Holy Trinity. The construction years, 1905 and 1901, also provide two specific historical dates.
Activities at Ashe Park
Ashe Park offers several ways to spend an active few hours. The High Country Disc Golf Course is free, has 18 holes, and is open to the public. The park also has a bike skills course designed by Black Diamond Trail Builders. The activities have different focuses: the number of holes is a clear point of reference for the disc golf course, while cycling is the focus of the bike skills course.
Fishing is permitted at Ashe Park Trout Pond with a license. For catch-and-release fishing, no more than three fish may be caught per person. Park rules can change, so check the current regulations before your visit.
Local Products and Theater
Ashe County Cheese is considered the oldest cheese factory in the southern United States and sells more than 20 varieties of its own Ashe County cheese. In West Jefferson, a farmers market offers a wide selection of fresh local produce, handmade products, and homemade goods. These highlight different aspects of local products: a cheese selection with more than 20 varieties and a market offering products across several categories.
Ashe County Little Theatre presents live theater featuring local performers. Individual performances are date-specific, so check the schedule if you are planning a theater visit.
