Military History and Remembrance

At the Airborne & Special Operations Museum, you can see a replica of part of a French village from the June 1944 Normandy invasion, along with a fully restored WACO CG-4A glider. The exhibits tell the story of soldiers’ missions, spanning from the beginnings of the Parachute Test Platoon to the ongoing Global War on Terrorism. The replica and the glider offer different points of entry into this sweeping narrative.

Right next to the museum is North Carolina Veterans Park, the first state park dedicated to veterans of all branches of the armed forces. Together, these two neighboring sites place the history of military missions alongside an explicit tribute to veterans.

City History and Cultural Traces

The Fayetteville History Museum is housed in the restored Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad Depot, built in 1890. The Museum of the Cape Fear offers further historical perspectives: its grounds include a house built in 1897 for a wealthy Cumberland County businessman, as well as the ruins of the Fayetteville Arsenal from the Civil War era. The museum’s exhibits explore both the region’s Indigenous roots and its later industrial development.

Walking tours through Fayetteville’s historic downtown district lead to local landmarks and follow in the footsteps of historically significant figures. They offer another way to discover the city’s history while exploring a district with a range of attractions.

The museums focus on different things: at the Fayetteville History Museum, a restored depot is itself the museum setting; at the Museum of the Cape Fear, the grounds include a historic house and arsenal ruins. This gives you different points of entry if you’re interested in architectural history, regional development or Civil War history.

Nature and Landscape

J. Bayard Clark Park & Nature Center is a natural woodland area dedicated to conservation and public education about North Carolina’s plants and wildlife. The park’s unpaved trails are used for walking and jogging. At the Nature Center, exhibits and live animals offer further perspectives on the natural world.

Carvers Creek State Park also brings together nature and history. The red-cockaded woodpecker and Pine Barrens tree frog find habitat at both of its access areas. At the Sandhills access, multi-use trails pass through longleaf pine ecosystems. Long Valley Farm in the park was once James Stillman Rockefeller’s winter residence.

The two parks offer different experiences: J. Bayard Clark Park emphasizes woodland, conservation and educational programs; at Carvers Creek State Park’s Sandhills access, longleaf pine ecosystems and multi-use trails shape the nature experience. The historic Long Valley Farm adds a glimpse into the area’s past use of the landscape.

Theater, Festival and Getting Here

Cape Fear Regional Theatre has a five-show main season. The International Folk Festival is a long-standing tradition that transforms downtown Fayetteville into a global village and celebrates the community’s diverse cultural traditions. Alongside museums and historic sites, theater and a cultural festival offer their own ways to explore.

Fayetteville has a regional airport that connects residents and visitors to the world via Charlotte and Atlanta. In Cumberland, cultural discoveries and natural areas are complemented by access through the regional airport.
