From prehistory to the present, the Warrensburgh Museum of Local History traces the area’s story; Hackensack Mountain Park offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing as winter activities. Warrensburg thus combines local history with nature-related themes and a distinct winter focus.

Woodland and Activities at Pack Forest

Within the Town of Warrensburg, Pack Forest is home to the mostly level, one-mile Grandmother's Tree Nature Trail. It winds through an old-growth forest of hemlocks and white pines; one of New York State’s historic trees stands along the trail. This brings the specific trail length and terrain together with a distinctive natural history connection. Pack Forest also offers opportunities for paddling, fishing, picnicking, and mountain biking. These activities complement the nature trail with a range of options, from paddling and biking to fishing or taking a picnic break. A map created in February 2016 documents the trail and activities; conditions may change. Check current access conditions before your visit.

History and Places to Learn

The Warrensburgh Museum of Local History was founded in 1975 as a Bicentennial project and is a joint initiative of the Warrensburgh Historical Society and the Town of Warrensburg. It tells the story of the Adirondack town from prehistory to the present and features exhibits on geology, industry, community life, and local traditions. These subjects offer different ways to explore the town’s history, from its geology and industry to daily life and local traditions.

Also within the Town of Warrensburg, the Warren County Fish Hatchery visitor center offers a distinct subject area: an educational video about the fish hatchery’s year-round operations, educational exhibits, a self-guided tour, and information about fish stocking. Unlike the museum, its focus is fish farming and fish stocking, while the museum covers the history of the area.

Historic Sites and Tours

More than 400 properties in Warrensburg are listed in the State Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places. The Warrensburgh Historical Society has developed four walking tours and two driving tours highlighting more than 400 historic properties in Warrensburg and the surrounding areas. The figures reflect different perspectives: the register listings refer to properties in Warrensburg, while the tours cover historic properties in the town and its surroundings.

Tour 1 of the Warrensburgh Heritage Trail Walking Tour follows a specific route. It begins and ends at Plank Bridge and runs via Main Street, Richards Avenue, River Street, and Ridge Avenue to Judd Bridge, then back to Main Street. This tour therefore provides a sequence of named streets and bridges, rather than just a general connection to local history.

Markets and Special Events

On the Schroon River, Riverfront Farmers Market Park is located on a former site of Warrensburg’s historic manufacturing mills. Some foundations remain and are visible today. The park is also home to the local farmers market. This brings the market and visible traces of the site’s former use as a mill together in one place.

The World's Largest Garage Sale has been a Warrensburg tradition since 1979 and spans all of Warrensburg over three days. Vendors line Main Street, while residents hold yard sales on almost every side street. Admission is free. If you’d like to include this event in your trip plans, check the event dates in advance to make sure the three-day period works with your trip.

Winter Activities

At the foot of the mountain trail in Hackensack Mountain Park, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are available. Local weather can affect these activities, and conditions may change. Check conditions before your visit. The park adds a distinct winter focus alongside the woodland and history themes that also define Warrensburg.
