A towpath, original locks and a dry dock bring the history of the Delaware & Hudson Canal to life in Sullivan. The Delaware & Hudson Canal Linear Park includes about 3½ miles of trail along the former towpath; along the route, you can see locks, a dry dock and spillways. The park is in the Route 209 corridor in the Town of Mamakating in Sullivan County. The towpath can be accessed at several points between the Village of Wurtsboro and the Hamlet of Phillipsport.

The canal’s construction and operating history also offer a way to explore its past: the Delaware & Hudson Canal Interpretive Center traces its construction phases and 70 years of operation. Photographs document its social impact on many workers and the project’s contribution to the region’s industrial development. Outside, activities include not only hiking but also cycling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and nature watching. Historic traces and activities for different seasons come together here.

Bridges and Upper Delaware History

Other historic sites offer different glimpses into the region’s past. Built in 1860, the Livingston Manor Covered Bridge spans Willowemoc Creek. Visitors can fish in the creek at Livingston Manor Covered Bridge Park. At Stone Arch Bridge Park, an 1882 stone bridge with three arches is a focal point; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park also offers fishing on the East Branch of the Callicoon Creek and walks on the Worthington Trail.

Fort Delaware Museum depicts the lives of the pioneers of the Delaware Company, who settled in the Upper Delaware Valley in 1754. Tours include demonstrations of the early settlers’ way of life and how they made handicrafts. Minisink Battleground Park commemorates the Battle of Minisink, the only major engagement of the Revolutionary War in the Upper Delaware; the park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Together, the museum and memorial site highlight different aspects of regional history.

Water, Wetlands and Trails

The landscape also takes many forms. Lake Superior State Park covers 1,409 acres and includes Lake Superior and Chestnut Ridge Pond. The beach area has a swimming area and rentals of kayaks, canoes, rowboats and pedal boats. Hiking, fishing and sledding are also permitted in the park. This range of options combines activities on the water with things to do in other seasons.

The Neversink River Unique Area covers 6,580 acres and features a gorge and the waterfalls Denton Falls, Mullet Brook Falls and High Falls. It also has more than 14 miles of designated trails. Whitewater paddling through the gorge is possible on the Neversink River; trout fishing is available in the designated Unique Area. The Bashakill Wildlife Management Area covers 3,107 acres, is designated as a state Bird Conservation Area and includes the largest freshwater wetland in southeastern New York.

Harvests, Markets and Fall Days

Local produce can be found at farmers’ markets throughout Sullivan County during the growing season, including seasonal fruit, vegetables, herbs, bedding plants, perennials and cut flowers. Callicoon Farmers' Market is a producer-only market; all goods come from within a 75-mile radius. Participating vendors may change. In Callicoon, Seminary Hill has a 12-acre orchard with 60 varieties of apples and pears. Cider made from the fruit is served in the tasting room overlooking the Delaware River Valley; check whether the room is open before your visit.

A seasonal gathering place is the Harvest Festival, held every fall by Bethel Woods. It features local farm produce, handmade goods, specialty foods, live music and hands-on activities. Check event dates before making plans. The historic site of the 1969 Woodstock Music & Art Fair also has a nine-hole disc golf course. It opened in May 2025 and is available on non-event days when the site is open.

Cunningham Family Farms also offers seasonal activities: a corn maze, a pick-your-own pumpkin patch and hayrides. Available activities may change with the season; check current details before visiting.
